[quote author=carolinec board=newsdusk thread=1948 post=12571 time=1226866391. Not being around at the start, I'd assumed "British horror anthology hell" meant it was about short horror stories, mostly UK, both old and new (since there are threads indicating that newer works are welcomed), but now I find that the original idea was vintage/pulpy horror, plus westerns, skinheads, punk, etc - not my scene at all (apart from the vintage horror).[/quote]
Despair not Caroline. It wasn't really the original idea, but that was how it developed. Dem was the Antho wizard, and as there were only around 5 - 10 members at the start, we could put up more or less what we liked. A lot of it was NEL-linked, hence the rather non-horror related subject matter.

It's not that the fans of creative writing or new horror have so much taken over - it's that - GASP - HORROR - the fans of vintage pulp aren't frankly pulling their weight( someone said that earlier right ? and they're right). Sobering isn't it? If you want posts on the older stuff, then provide those posts and start those kinds of discussions! Caroline said it and yes, she had a point (although I really do think you should try a giant crab book, Caroline - you'd love em! ) Have to take exception to this 'pre-1979' business - now I love the '70s as much as the next miserable old bastard but come on, so much of the stuff we've always celebrated on here carried on well into the '80s - even Death Bell came out in 1980, KC! It seems ridiculous to me (not too mention fairly arbitrary) to impose a cut-off point like that. OK, maybe the stuff that came out later wasn't quite as great as 'The Golden Age' but does that mean we should just dismiss it? Talking of the '70s though, Craig mentioned On The Buses earlier. Did you see the news? Reg Varney has passed away. The Vault banner should be flying at half mast today.

But not as good as the Scorpion books Steve. Yeah I get your point and I like '81 vintage books myself. However I think you lose the special nature of the group by embracing all books and it seems all films and tv. Where does it stop before Vault equals general everything horror group? I think some people here either don't care overmuch or are scared of stepping out of the liberal horror line being towed. Reading what Evil Eye and FM posted about the gestation of the group -it happened by chance birthed from old anthologies. That's the basics we should head back too I feel.

The old Vault flag would of been ...

But not as good as the Scorpion books Steve. Scorpion, 1980 Scorpion: Second Generation, 1982 I know what you're saying, KC, of course I do. I just don't like the idea of imposing restrictions and limits on ourselves in that way. Despite those who would wish to say its descended to the pit like every other board I think it remains a singular place unlike anything else I have come across on the web. Well said, Sir! I'd like to suggest an answer to Dem's original question; Who Will Save Vault Of Evil? Or perhaps that should be, is it even worth saving? When people post here saying that Vault has changed their lives and do it in all sincerity, I think we should take it to heart. Just look back at some of the posts in this thread - Even in the midst of our 'crisis' we're still supporting each other, helping each other out, sending each other stuff... Of course that's worth saving. Who will save Vault? Vault will save Vault by doing what it's always done - just being Vault.

DEVOUR '81 - iredeemable killer pike book. Now you're talking, KC! If we need some sort of yardstick by which to decide whether a book is suitable for inclusion on the Vault shelves or not, that's the question we should be asking - not "When was it published?" but; "Is it irredeemable?" P.S. My lack of total book date recall lets me down. You should do what I do and just look in the front... Actually, I reckon your memory is probably better than mine. I've been trying to remember the name of that bookshelf we used to talk about... the something bookshelf... what was it?

Disreputable bookshelf... That's my memory knackered. I thought it was The Questionable Bookshelf. I'm anti the imposed dates too, because there was some delirious stuff from the 1960s. And probably the fifties. Dem's treasured 20s and 30s stuff from the early Pans could be considered Questionable. And disreputable. In fact disreputable sits better with our one-time aim (?) of being the good-natured outlaws of the so-called Horror Community.

Call me an idiot but is their any other possible interpretation on Rog's decision to move Filthy Creation other than
To trim the Vault To avoid controversy To reduce conflict To create a forum where new writing is welcome To allow the Vault a chance to return to its original goals
If so I utterly fail to see it.

I'm continuing to add content from here to the FC site. This morning, Sean Wright's When Graveyards Yawn anthology and D F Lewis's Weirdmonger collection.
Oddly, I seem to have started very few threads in the Noughties/2000+ section.

Blimey! I can't see one. Oh dear; it looks like I'm to blame. I wonder if that make me an intellectual tw*t. I'll certainly admit to being a tw*t, but I doubt I can be classed as an intellectual. Previewing this post the first tw*t has been replaced by thingy, but the second hasn't.
