anyone checked out these image comics? i'm up to about #6 of the collected editions (about 5 issues of the series in each). it follows a cop and the small group of survivors he has drawn to himself in the aftermath of a zombie rising. pretty good stuff with some really nasty bits (akthough the worst stuff is mainly inflicted by humans on other humans-like most proper zombie fiction!!!). let me know your thoughts.

^agreed there does seem to be lot that is away from what i'd consider to be the 'genre' and some that feature themes that seem 'played out' (estate agent dealing with ghosts, haunted ship with vengeful ghosts). i know theyre aiming for a certain type of horror - more the psycological etc. but sometimes i do wonder!! that said i'm still enjoying the issues and there always seems to be one or two stories that really strike a cord. there was a fantasy tale about two cat burgalars and a killer fog that i enjoyed.

cotton comes to harlem (along with the rest of the harlem cycle) is one of my favourite books. not seen the film though, didnt think it could be anywhere near as good as himes' book.

I was about seven and then being fairly mortified by some of the gorier spreads (one of which was from The Beast Must Die if I recall). Hooray! THE BEAST MUST DIE!!! bloody classic. '...not who is the murderer, but who is the ...werewolf..."

not an oldie and not really a horror but the last book i bought that i really enjoyed was 'last light' by alex scarrow. it's all about the oil supply being cut off and centres around one family trying to survive. the 'teenage street slang' really really grated with me as it seemed the author had simply either made it up or misunderstood the 'correct' usage. all in all though i havent read a novel that has held my interest throughout like this did for a while.
