It was a nervy night, Dem. Losing in a semi-final is the second worst time to lose. There was such an expectation on the England team last night. They all know the history of England and semi-finals, especially manager Southgate. I thought we played decently against a tough, well-drilled team, who have shown their quality in the tournament. Overall, I think England deserved the win. Schmeichel played a blinder, I'm sure his dad was proud of him. For me, Sterling showed why he is so important. Saka seems to be really growing into international football, and I was puzzled why he was substituted. As well as being pleased that England have reached their first final since 1966, I was delighted for Southgate. I'm sure that penalty miss in 1996 has weighed on him since; perhaps this will lay those ghosts. Getting to the SF last night made him the second most successful England manager after Sir Alf, and win or lose on Sunday, he has surely secured his position. Next up, Italy; very difficult opponents, and they, for me, start as favourites, but favourites don't always win, so I hope England will win, but know this will be a very hard game.

While Mr Neville's record at Valencia FC was a fine example of leadership...ho-ho.

I looked at a list of Euro winners, and it was odd to see that the Soviet Union and Czechoslovakia had won it. Also Yugoslavia was Runner-up twice. None of these exist anymore.

Ive been looking up old Communist football, and I read that Berliner FC Dynamo, an East German club won the league ten times in a row. Which is even worse than Celtic in Scotland for boredom. The reason was it was controlled by the Stasi, the ruthless East German secret police.

I guess that it would be better to lose to them than find yourself in a damp cellar with wires attached to your dangly bits and someone cranking a hand generator. Reminds me somewhat of when Iraq didn't do too well at football and One of Saddam's sons would encourage the players to do better by hanging them up and beating the soles of their feet with a cane.

Ooohhh, well-drilled! Bold! This was your colour commentary from Bona Sports. cheers, H. It was better than the actual commentary was. It was awful, especially after England's second goal. I didn't know who any of the players were and he never told you. After England went ahead it was things like "Remember where you were on this day." As if any man is going to remember, as they will have all gotten blind drunk and forgotten everything that happened. Edited to say he kept mentioning 1966 and failed semi-finals before this one. No man who I was with cared at all, and were actually sick of hearing about the past. Also when the Scots always complain England fans always mention 1966 whenever an international is on, it's not true. It's just the commentators. Most fans are just as sick about hearing it as the Scots are. It just reminds them how miserable England have been at kicking a bladder for 55 years.

To me, 1966 means:
Debut of Dark Shadows, my all time favorite TV show (it was a daytime Gothic horror serial and it had my name all over it) Year One of Satan in Rosemary's Baby Release of Revolver, one of the best LPs ever from the Beatles Valley of the Dolls by Miss Jacqueline Midcult Susann published ... because Broadway doesn't go for booze and dope, baby, and Everybody knows how bitchy fags can be (lots of asterisks from ProBoards on that last line, I predict)
Now I'm the one in danger of being put in the Iron Maiden or whatever we have here for a "timeout"...
cheers, H.

Ooh I've an idea for a thread. What about this? Called something like In This Year. Then we name a random year and people name horror/ghost stories or films that came out in that year. People could also name favourite years for horror too.

dem bones/ripper please suggest best channel to watch final on, because I wasn't joking about how terrible the commentary was. It was shocking.

Mute button, superb DIY football themed mix tape in background for me. Only way to avoid godawful renditions of "It's c***ng home" dirge every ten seconds/ until the Italians bang in a second [delete as applicable]. Didn't rate last night's commentary either, but loved contribution of the Roy Keane-Gary Neville-Ian Wright studio line-up.

ITV by sound of it. Just be grateful Wales went out, so you were spared the R. Sav*ge experience.
