4-0 that is amazing. Did number 7 score? According to a site I checked, Jack Grealish is no. 7, so I'm afraid he didn't get the opportunity to score since he didn't play tonight. But, no. 6 Harry Maguire and no 8 Jordan Henderson did score so darned close to that magic 7.

Menfolk here (in my vicinity, not too near, I keep a wise distance, as men are generally fiends) seem genuinely shocked at this score. The idea it was comfortable in the end seems amazing for them.
Edited to explain nature of men.

Like Stan and Jack (looked their names up) from On the Buses, England have their own date with destiny! It's not with dolly birds ( desperate linkage of the two here) but with History itself! Will they prevail like Stan with a clippie on the back seat of his bus parked on a beach somewhere, or will their opponents (forgot who) be like the Hitler moustached Blakey and say: I hate you Butler! Tune in to find out! Slowly but surely Stan, Jack and the crew weave their magic spell. So that's two box sets I'm after tomorrow? Becoming increasingly concerned, I mean interested, as to whether you have picked this up. Please inform as soon as possible on this vital point. Please ask "back of van man" too if he once drove a council bus and in spare time used it to pick up dolly birds. I believe it's something we should know. Thank you.

Edited to explain nature of men. While every England supporter wants so badly for the team to be in the final, long experience has shown that they too often fall at the QF stage. I think there is a sense of disbelief over how routine the defeat of Ukraine was last night. It was a very competent and assured performance from England. Harry Kane has found his scoring boots, Sancho finally got his chance, Maguire showed why he is so important, and Southgate was able to bring off key players to rest or protect them for the SF clash with the Danes.

England 4 Ukraine 0. Looked like one game too many for Shevchenko's iron men - those extra time exertions seeing off the Swedes looked to have caught up with them. Some splendid individual performances. Slabhead looking the part, Luke Shaw bombing up and down pitch to great purpose, Pickford getting himself back together after almost joining the comedy own goal club, Sterling, Kane and twinkle-toes Sandro putting the fear of God into opposition defenders. Most impressive of all. Gareth Southgate's leadership. Liked the bonding between Ukraine team and their appreciative supporters at the end, each saluting the other with their variation on the Iceland thunderclap. Semi finals Tue 6: Italy v SpainWed 7: Denmark v England Slowly but surely Stan, Jack and the crew weave their magic spell. So that's two box sets I'm after tomorrow? Please ask "back of van man" too if he once drove a council bus and in spare time used it to pick up dolly birds. I believe it's something we should know. Thank you. Alas, no. It was pouring down, so he only unloaded about a quarter of a van load of dvds and books, no 'On The Buses' box set among them. I'm going to watch 'Foggy Night' and 'The Football Match' now to console myself and advise everyone to do same. Maybe we'll have more joy next Sunday. I only saw your post when I got home, so perhaps you could remind me next weekend to grill him over any bus driving/ dolly bird exploits. Does it have to be the 'seventies or are we allowed a few years either side?

There were 74 episodes over 7 series from 1969 to 1973. The classic cast was present from series 2 when Doris Hare replaced Cicely Courtneidge as Stan's mum, to the end of series 6, when Michael Robbins left the show--Olive is divorcing at the start of series 7, and Reg Varney also left halfway through that final series. Bob Grant (Jack) and Stephen Lewis (Blakey) wrote some of the later episodes. Truth be told, the show was not the same without Robbins and Varney, and it was unsurprising that there were no more after series 7. Let's also remember the 3 feature films made by Hammer: On the Buses (1971), Mutiny on the Buses (1972) and Holiday on the Buses (1973). These films helped keep Hammer solvent in the turbulent early 70s. The Blakey character starred in a follow-up series called Don't Drink the Water, in which Blakey and his sister (played by Pat Coombs) move to Spain after Blakey retires. Sadly, all except Anna Karen (Olive) have now passed away. The fate of Bob Grant was particularly tragic. After On the Buses ended, Grant found that work was hard to come by. He suffered mental problems and attempted suicide. In 1987 he disappeared for 5 days. I remember at the time that there were snide comments that it was a publicity stunt, which disgusted me. He had actually gone to Dublin to kill himself. After several projects, including a proposed On the Buses revival, came to nothing, his mental issues led to more suicide attempts, and he was found dead of carbon monoxide poisoning in his garage in 2003.

It is so sad. It says he became typecast. Depression is a terrible thing. The series was so popular that it describes his third wedding as an event that drew huge crowds.

It is so sad. It says he became typecast. Depression is a terrible thing. The series was so popular that it describes his third wedding as an event that drew huge crowds. Critics hated it, but audiences loved it. I only remember the later series, but did go to see the film versions at the pictures. The cast, particularly Varney, Grant and Lewis, were very popular at the time, but, yes, Grant got typecast and work dried up. Interesting that he wrote and starred in a one-off called Milko in the mid-70s about the adventures of a milkman. It didn't become a series, but nearly a decade later Robin Askwith (who knows a thing or two about dolly birds) starred in a very similar series for ITV called Bottle Boys. After ITV showed the On the Buses series on Saturday afternoons around 1990, and it proved very popular with audiences even though it was two decades old,, there was a plan to revive the show with the original cast. There was an article on it in, I think, TV Times. Of course, it fell by the wayside, which worsened Grant's depression. Very sad.

Italy 1 Spain 1 (aet, Italy win 4-2 on penalties).
With showboating costing the French dear versus the Swiss and Belgium, yet again, corpsing when it matters, seems to me Italy have been the most consistently impressive team in tournament. Much credit to Spain, then, for matching them over 120 minutes. Another smashing game (well refereed, too), nothing between two attractive sides save one has a giant between the sticks. A game that deserved to be settled by a winning goal rather than rotten sodding penalties.

Agreed that Italy have been overall the most impressive team and deserve their place in the final. As for tonight, all I will say is that I wish England good fortune and we shall see what happens.

Denmark 1 England 2 (after extra torture: score at 90 mins 1-1).
I hope Rip is all right!
Almost a rerun of the previous night's game, with the eventual losers the better team for at least an hour before a raft of substitutions removed their goal threat. England sparked into life after falling behind to spectacular free kick from the busy Mikkel Damsgaard on the half hour, equalised before break after Sterling missed a sitter 30 seconds earlier. Second 45 a terrifying watch for home fans as Jordan Pickford went into bizarre keeper mode and Slabhead, furious over a soft yellow card, required calming. Extra time saw England take control as their opponents ran out of gas. Have to feel for the Danes who've been a joy to watch throughout and deserved better than to lose to a highly dubious penalty which man of the match Kasper Schmeichel will know he should have turned around a post. Three Lions scrapped and scraped past a very good team. Now they have to do it again - against a great one - in four days time. Quote of night, Gary Neville on Gareth Southgate. "The standards of leaders in this country in the last couple years has been poor. And looking at that man there that's everything a leader should be: respectful, humble, telling the truth." Runner-up, Roy Keane's reminiscences of attending a Neil Diamond show, "... About 10 years ago, but I ended up arguing with the woman next to me. She kept singing all the songs out quite loud so I ended up in a bit of trouble that night ... but brilliant concert.ā
