If you are very bad and decadent then the picture of yourself you keep in your attic will grow a beard. Men you have been warned!

Everyone looks like idealized pod-people. You don't believe for a second that those people - if they are people and not something manufactured on a PC - symbolize the content or are even real. Even those silly Nick Carter photo covers back then from Tandem were better.

Only if they are living and breathing human beings which with those photoshopped models who are not doing a convincing job is in doubt.

They would actually put me off buying them. Another example of two westerns. Would you rather buy this: or that:

Had no idea that the Wordsworth covers have become something of a talking point: Madeline Raynor Electric LiteratureCrime and Punishment and Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn are absolute shockers. There are people who look like that. They are people too, you know. If you prick them, do they not bleed? Possibly not: re: Wives and Daughters, Ms. Raynor reveals; "This is just a picture of Nina Dobrev in The Vampire Diaries with another face pasted on it, so someone should probably sue. She and everyone else on this cover look especially weird because their bodies and clothing are photorealistic but their faces are illustrations that have been airbrushed into oblivion. Side note: this Alice in Wonderland cover similarly stole an image of Mia Wasikowska from the 2010 movie and slapped someone elseās face on her."

I guess the publishers feel the need to make in-your-face covers to attract the young(er) generation, since many people weren't into reading or hated it even before the internet, gaming & cell phones.

This was the case when Wordsworth dropped the uniform 'Mystery & Imagination' design (embossed skull logo, 'bloodstains,' etc) in favour of those drab but inoffensive covers nobody on here liked but, apparently, the wider audience were more inclined to buy.

For the record, I thought the bloodstained skull was tacky. It could well be you are in a majority on that. If you recall, we were - and I hope, still are - on good terms with the publisher, and they explained the skull design wasn't working with what I gather was, and remains, a predominantly student audience. The design was fine by me, especially when accompanied by a striking graphic, e.g. I find the 'Varney,'' Monk,' and 'Uncle Silas' covers particularly attractive.

I liked the bloodstained skull, though my tastes might run toward the tacky side. Those new designs almost seem as though they were made as a joke, or on a dare, or under the influence of a controlled substance. The article Dem linked is funny--particularly the Pinky and the Brain reference.
