When Ghosts do Cosplay, Skeletons in drag, etc. Our Badly Posed Photo covers thread got murdered by ph*t*b*cket, so here's a revamp. When ghosts do cosplay, skeletons in drag, rubbish monsters, and, of course great badly and/or brilliantly posed cover photos of all genres. Snappy dressers also likely to feature.

Let's do the Wheatley, just for fun. With the exception of the historicals the novels have their own thread. But I unconditionally love the Arrows. The Prisoner in the Mask is a de Richleau story (and a drawn cover, but I included it regardless), The Ravishing of Lady Mary Ware is a Roger Brook.

These are great, Andreas - many thanks. Wheatley was a serial offender so I'm sure we'll see more of him later. Meanwhile, three groovy skeletons, one camp resurrection man and a dodgy corpse.

I think this fits in this thread, it's an old favorite anyhow.

Varney does attract some pretty dire covers, in particular the 5 volume Wildside Press edition: Those are just terrible. They've really got that "first 5 minutes with a free trial version photo program" look.

Spectacular, James! I wanted to look the Varneys up to see from what year they are. They are truly awful. While looking on A***, I discovered this new edition from 2021, which as a Kindle is really cheap. Its cover is also pretty awful.
But when I looked into the text, because I wanted to see who is responsible for this - no such luck, some "independently published" - , I got the cover of the printed edition, which is a beauty. Stoker has been often unjustly maligned. But to put him on the cover for Rymer is either pretty cheeky or really off-putting. You decide.

On the other hand, one of the translated German editions from 1976 also went for the joke-cover.
At least it had a lot of illustrations included, sadly uncredited, which merit some further scans. Back then I only did this one.

Is the Pargeter a good novel? Not got around to it. It was off my friend's market stall when he was having a three-for-a-£1 morning. Here's the details. Edith Pargeter - A Bloody Field In Shrewsbury (Sphere, 1974: originally McMillain, 1972). Blurb: Henry of Bolingbroke took the crown of England with the edge of his Sword and the aid of Lord Henry Percy, the battle-loving Hotspur. But as the King and his loyal friend fought to preserve the Lancastrian order, they little suspected that one day they would fight on opposing sides in A BLOODY FIELD BY SHREWSBURY.
