Awesome photo, Malcolm. Perhaps you should be glad you never saw the Walker who made those tracks... cheers, Steve They ran up to the cairn at the summit and just ended. No return tracks, none continuing down the far side of the mountain, nowt. I was with a small group from a local walking club and none of them put two and two together until I pointed it out to them. After that, the idea of staying at the summit to admire the view and eat our sandwiches was rapidly abandoned... The Roc bird could be responsible.

Sorry to be really boring but if the heel is as deep or deeper than the toe (which it looks like it is in the pic) then it could very well be someone walking back in their own tracks. One of those things you do as a child/teen in order to spook people

It would've been interesting to have seen someone walking backwards so carefully that they didn't smudge a single footprint for almost two miles down a mountain track...

I'm a fan of wild hunt stories so I enjoyed Mr. Marsh's tale quite a bit. I frequently see foxes in my neighborhood, but fortunately none of them have eaten any babies (to my knowledge).
I have one story left to read: "Satan's Sabbat."
Thanks to Dem for hosting the festivities, Chrissie for the illustrations, and the contributors for their stories and photographs.
Haunted holidays to all y'all.

"Satan's Sabbat" was a charming little yarn with a sentimental ending. At this time of year, it's lovely to sink into a tale with that old-time religious touch.
Excellent drawing by Chrissie too! Ah, a bouquet of Xmas cheer.
cheers, H.

And many thanks to Dem for pulling it all together, which must've been an epic task. An excellent selection*, it made the darkest time of the year even darker. In the best possible way, of course.
*DOI - Yes, yes, I know....

It'll be what it'll be, I'm only saying there is a not uncommon trick, the giveaway of which is the even heel and toe indentation. You don't have to walk two miles backwards, when you want to leave a spooky effect you walk backwards a little way and jump to the side for a ditch, into other tracks or onto one of those convenient tussocks shown in the pic.
