I guess you could buy it for the cover art. Judging from the very detailed, well-written book reviews you have shared, I do not think the book would be at all your flagon of mead. I'm a Sax Rohmer fan and I remember very little of it. I did think the ending was pretty cool. The author took a break from writing about Fu Manchu for around ten years after finishing this book.

When was the last time you saw a paperback produced today that invested that much of an effort in its design. Never? The appeal of a lousy photoshopped cover with a picture which wouldn't be good enough for a average photo course is that the costs for the publisher are about 1.50. Beats effort or taste every time. McGinnis is a great artist. Wonderful work. And Prather can be amusing in small doses.

That's a nice haul, Kooshy. I can't beat it, but I did pick up this at the Salvos shop for 2 bucks. I think KEW lists it on one of his Twilight Zone lists, but I've never read it:

The thing about the G.I. Joe novels from the 80s is that they're basically written as pulpy adventure stories for YA readers. And the cover art is just plain amazing. I worry that if they ever republished them, they'd give them stupid artsy-fartsy Photoshop covers instead of the hand-drawn, painted pictures. Book covers really feel like a lost art. I can definitely see kids who grew up reading these graduating to the kinds of novels discussed over in the "War!" section.

The Marvel comic is held in a high regard, but back then it wasn't my cup of tea. I didn't like the artists, and I wasn't a fan of the writer Larry Hama. Which has changed. I love his run on Wolverine. But I never knew there were novelisations. A nice find.

Killer Flies looks hilarious. The perfect reading for being holed up during a pandemic. Maybe it's not a surprise as a frequent visitor to this adytum that I have a knack for gallows humor.
cheers, H.

But I never knew there were novelisations. A nice find. They're actually original stories (using the characters from the show, anyway). There were six books published before the series got canned.

Nabbed another copy of Dennis Wheatley's Uncharted Seas. It is in my reading queue. I am on a Wheatley spree. I just read THEY FOUND ATLANTIS and am now reading THE KA OF GIFFORD HILLARY. Both quite odd in their own individual ways.
