Martin Jones (ed.) - Bedabbled!: British Horror and Cult Cinema # 1 (B!, Feb. 2011) Rik Rawling: image taken from Mumsy, Nanny, Sonny and Girly. Martin Jones - Editorial
Martin Jones - Whatever Happened To Tony Chestnut. The very English Gothic of Mumsy, Nanny, Sonny and Girly.
Sean Crossey - It's Only A Game: The atmospheric tale of demon worship, self-mutilation and murderous children that is Blood On Satan's Claw
Julian Upton - Never Never Land: Social realism meets something like horror in Bloody Kids.
Johnny Mains - Further Tales Of Unease: interview with prolific tie-in novelist John Burke. i'm currently reading through a low-res pdf proof copy and thought i'd best prepare you for the coming of Bedabbled!. Martin Jones's new publication will appeal to our many British Horror film fiends, particularly those who, all these years later, still carry a torch for Vanessa 'Girly' Howard and the scary skull with the wandering eye from Blood On Satan's Claw. The debut is a 'Bloody kids' special (#2 is Cult of Satan!) - and Martin writes in his introduction: "The canny amongst you may have already guessed that Bedabbled! isn't going to venture much further than, say, An American Werewolf In London in terms of years covered. You'd be right. Sorry, no Hellraiser, Dust Devil, etc. I can't speak for other contributors, but it's my intention to create a new mythology of British screen horror, and within these pages it'll be done through what I consider to be the most interesting periods of film production this country ever encountered. Aside from the well-documented 'big three' (Hammer, Tigon, Amicus), there is a wealth of imaginative material to mine from countless movies (and TV productions) and the insane figureheads of this mag - Mumsy, Vampyres. Goodbye Gemini, Deep End, The Shout - will be featured in some form or another, alongside other works familiar and surprising."With the recent British Fantasy Journal howler fresh in mind, i'm not gonna attempt any kind of "review" until i know hard copies have made their way into the customers' clutches, but i'm predicting a big future for this lively 32 pager. Our friend and colleague, Justin 'Paperback Fanatic' Marriott looks after the layout and print management duties, but he's keen to stress that Bedabbled "is most definitely Martin's baby" and as babies go, this one has more than a touch of the It's Alive!'s about it. The magazine has no internet presence just yet, but you can order a copy from Martin from: bedabbled AThotmail.co.uk (as ever, substitute the AT with an @) Price is £3.50 post-paid UK/ £6.00 world-wide

chances are i'm not even doing the cover justice because, as mentioned, its been scanned from the roughs. inside you'll find plenty more of the vivacious Vanessa giving it best Wednesday Addams of the Home Counties, and the Blood On Satan's Claw stills at least partially explain why The News Of The Screws & co were stark drooling gaga for all things black sorcery in the early 'seventies. the John Burke interview spills over onto the inside back cover so he even gets a dash of colour. very well done to Martin Jones and his contributors for putting together such an impressive debut!

This sounds like a must - and a good way to discover films worth getting on DVD (if possible) now that I have virtually got every Hammer, Amicus and Universal (of the vintage era) that I want already.
By the way, dem, the new BFS Journal, badly delayed "at the printers", will finally be on its way to members this weekend, despatched by PS Publishing.

received a pdf of the rough draft earlier which suggests this will be coming very soon ... Martin Jones (ed.) - Bedabbled! #2: Cult Of Satan (B!, September, 2011) Richard Sala Editorial Contributors Martin Jones - Heavy Scent: The Shame Of Virgin Witch James Oliver - Beyond Good And Evil: Satan's Slaves reassessed Robyn Talbot - All You're Giving Me Is Demons: Satan Takes A Holiday In The Devil's Men Sarah Morgan - 'Bloody Kids': Ten Minutes Early. Nothing But The Night. Ahead Of Its Time Or Behind The Times? Interviews Johnny Mains - 'It Never Stops'. Satan's Slaves director Norman J. Warren. Martin Jones - Hairy Freak Goes AIP! Film-maker & Anthologist Michel Parry. Letters B! DirectoryThe promised 'Cult Of Satan' special! Whereas the debut came in at 34 pages, this time Martin Jones has upped the page count dramatically to 60. Having long been an aficionado of lurid Black Magic themed paperbacks, horror movies and amusing sensationalist newspaper exposés, Bedabbled! #2 would have to try seriously hard to fail with this reader, but my spidy sense tells me that this issue is already being marked as "of substantial interest" by a number of our regulars. "Review" to follow later as spending too long looking at the pictures has meant i've not had time to read anything bar the twelve page interview with Ms. Linda Lovecraft's special bosom pal Michel Parry, and that, my friends, reason enough alone for investing in a hard copy! Letters pages reveal a number of names familiar from the mighty Paperback Fanatic, very appropriate as Mr. Jones' magazine is already shaping up like it's sinful cinema equivalent. Order via bedabbled AThotmail.co.uk (substitute the AT with @) and those of you on faceache can catch up Mr. Jones at Bedabbled!: British Horror and Cult Cinema

oh hell, mr parry, johnny interviews the nicest man in horror, and every film there is one i like... curse you dem, for spending my money for me...
actually, am i the only one thinking there's been an upturn in the kind of genre publications in this area, or is it just that they're only just finding their way here? either way, it can only be a good thing (though not according to 'er dans la maison who bemoans the letterbox going and 'more crap' falling through - she might have been right about the dick barton tv series dvd that arrived yesterday, mind).

ha! i get that from the bride of demonik whenever a new Paperback Fanatic comes slithering along the carpet. "look at those covers. oh, that one of the 'nazi' storm-trooper with her boobs falling out is so disgusting!' it's funny how i always have the devil's own job trying to wrestle the thing back off of her. wednesday dem's reaction to Beddabled #2 should be choice. actually, am i the only one thinking there's been an upturn in the kind of genre publications in this area, or is it just that they're only just finding their way here i so hope you're right, pulps. There have been tons of e-mags, very good ones at that, but i've never finished a one of them, whereas if i had them in hard copy with a lurid cover and a staple stuck through 'em i know i'd have gone through them cover to cover. the plan is to get well stuck into Bedabbled! over the weekend, so expect a non-review sometime around 2016. just spotted that Bedabbled #3 (March 2012) takes its name from one of my all time fave top pop smashes, the Lee Harvey Oswald Band's Getting Wasted With The Vampires right. to Argos and beyond.

and again, off the butt and onto paypal at last...
very fine companions to PF and indeed to Kontinental X as the brit bias works as contrast to the euro sleaze of the latter.
excellent Michel Parry and John Burke interviews, some interesting critique of movies that treats them seriously as pieces of work trapped in their time without being 'serious' in a film academic style, and come on - even THEY aren't that keen on Virgin Witch, either!
the Satans Slaves and Blood On Satan' Claw pieces are particularly recommended, although the Bloody Kids piece is the most intriguing, as it really makes you want to try and fid this forgotten piece of tv.
one to wait for with as much relish as PF. it took me ages to get round to buying, and if you haven't then don't hold out any longer!
