Got offered a job at the local hospital by a bloke who talked about steamed vegetables.

Commiserations on one's new job. I don't expect they'd have given it to anyone who frequents a site like this and then cancels his account, so it was probably wise to keep this under wraps. These things are frowned upon, y'know.

Good luck to you, JK! This steamed vegetable fetishist sounds like he's just what you need to make yours a stress-free work environment. Can he get hold of broad beans? No lie, I think there's some kind of famine going on with them down here. Sainsbury's haven't even been stocking the frozen ones since about Christmas; admittedly, they didn't have much going for them by way of flavour, but it was better than nothing.

I think your best bet's probably ebay; Baby Broad BeansNatural Broad BeansCaveat emptor: I've just had a closer look at the description for that second item and it turns out they're butter beans! I mean, you don't mind paying £3.16 (+ £4.99 p+p) for a 445ml jar of class A broad beans, do you? You expect it, especially when there's a war on and everything. But butter beans? Bloody rip off! Profiteering, that's all it

In order to survive I push pens in an office during the week, but work at the local hospital at weekends, bank hols etc. Look on the bright side JK - they may well have a great second hand book stall.

I note that Sainsbury's have replaced the frozen packs with some Soya concoction that look like broad beans but aren't. As yet, I've been loath to experiment to that extent, but the situation is now so desperate I may well take the plunge this week. If so, I'll let you know how I get along with them, OK? Thanks for all your help in this matter, JK. Perhaps if you could slip in a good word for me to vegetable man, he might have private sources? FM, I got your email and will put aside an hour tonight to get stuck in! Thank you!

LOL! That's even funnier than Barbara Windsor on the Paul O'Grady Show tonight!

As yet, I've been loath to experiment to that extent, but the situation is now so desperate I may well take the plunge this week. I was in Sainsbury's today and had a look at those frozen soya beans you mention but, perhaps even more importantly, saw they've got broad beans in tins, so tonight I'll be having my first taste of broad bean flesh in quite a while. Do you want me to pick you up a few tins? I can't remember how much they were off-hand but they weren't extortionate... you know, sort of broad bean price. How do you have your broad beans by the way? Do you just eat them neat or do you do anything special with them? When I was a smallish child we always used to have them with parsley sauce but obviously life was very different in those days... I'll tell you what, I'm not keen on fish, are you? And it's not just the little bones either... any fish, even tinned tuna. Maybe a fish finger at a push... especially if it's cold... but that's about as far as I'd go fishwise. All the best.

Broad beans were invented by a sadist to torture small children with, what are you all like? Now a nice soggy sprout, well, that's a different class of green alltogether.

I like sprouts too. It's not an either/or thing with me. I suppose I'm lucky in that I can enjoy the best of both vegetable worlds.

I love most cooked vegetables, including sprouts, broad beans, butter beans, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower. The only ones I'm not too keen on, but will still eat, are peas. I find them a bit boring. My wife loves them. Says I should give peas a chance. David

Between sprouts and broad beans there is an enormous gulf. Sprouts are a form of food and broad beans are giving me ideas for horror stories

I never thought I'd be reading about these sorts of pulses on here! I'm afraid I have the gene that makes you taste the really horrible bits of sprouts and broad beans. A kind of 'sprout intolerance' if you will. That's my excuse, anyway
