Thanks to those complete and utter bumholes at Or*ng*, i've been without any internet connection for entire weekend and - since last Wednesday, this - haven't been able to get at my inbox to check out those exciting viagra and 'extension' offers from friendly strangers. So this is a quick newsflash from the library to let you know i haven't died ('cause i know you're all well concerned about that) and i'll get back to ignoring your urgent pm's for weeks at a time as soon as i'm able. Plus! i've got some truly ghastly reviews to go up! And there may even be a 'my arm' update. The bride and monkey send their best.

And there may even be a 'my arm' update. I'm really looking forward to that! Can we have pictures again?

Come back soon before we start spilling our juice and running into the road! Eh? O*ang* latest: they're still useless, but have at least acknowledged problem and reckon they'll get it sorted today or tomorrow. If I owe anyone an email, please be patient as I'm gonna have a weeks worth of garbage to sift through blah blah blah ....

Apologies for lengthy silences or perhaps that should be for breaking them.
Things have got so grim that it looks increasingly like i'm gonna have to do the whole dreaded 'complete reinstall' thing on both computer and 'brain'. If that don't work then I'll be missing from here for a long time and we'll need to sort out what to do with administration of the board ....
Between joyous pen-friendship with assorted O*ran*e "advisors", I actually managed to (re)read some decent stuff - three of the 'Errol Lecale' novels, T. Chris Martindale's Night Blood (a kind of potted Salem's Lot with a Randall & Hopkirk (Deceased) subplot - much better fun than it sounds), Raymond Thompson & Treve Daly's spiteful siege thriller The Number To Call Is ..... and - quite appropriate in the circumstances given much of it touches upon the horrors of the internet - I'm 300 pages into Ramsey Campbell's The Grin Of The Dark.
Hope all is well. I've hardly had a chance to catch up on anything but good to see the old place is still going along strong.
Take care
Kev

Apologies for lengthy silences or perhaps that should be for breaking them. I should also have been apologising for silences. But I suppose it's possible nobody noticed. Anyway, I learned yesterday that due to fucking Or*ng*, you'll have a dead link among members sites soon as A Haunted Dolls House will probably disappear. That's if I understand their plans rightly, which seems to be to replace all the 'hand made' ftp websites with more blogs. Strewth, talk about 'dumbing down'... No offence to anyone with blogs of course. But it will mean the slideshows will probably just disappear as I've been hosting those at Orange ftp. Wonder if I should switch to Sky...

Yes, you and Dem both been playing truant and are now coming out with the old homework excuses all of which are doubtless valid. You were both missed.

It occurred to me that my Haunted Dolls House wil not be the only site affected by the Or*n*e change. Dem's own monument to HTML, the confusingly-named Vault of Evil site (as opposed to the two Vault of Evil boards and a Wordpress blog) is also an ftp site. Or*n*e say that ftp will be closed on Monday. I thought of Sky as an alternative, thinking that it offers a replacement for the hopless Fr**v*ew as well as broadband for the same money that Orange is charging. But a local friend of mine can't get an internet connection with Sky... Coral (credit where it's due) suggested that I try Freewebs again, and I managed to get the slide show working there this time, proving that girls on the site are useful for something after all. So maybe that'll be my site's new home.

... proving that girls on the site are useful for something after all. Just watch it, Rog - pushing your luck a bit there I think! Seriously, chaps, hope you both get your internet connections and things sorted soon - I'm missing the pair of you!

I've just remembered another member's site built through the apparently soon to be gone Orange ftp: Monkey's Scary Vampire Site This morning I had a try at the new Orange site maker thing. Initially it looks very flash - which it would being mainly a flash-driven site. There's text formatting and a music and movie upload option. But after opening 5 pages, I was told I'd have to upgrade to get more pages!

Gem of a site too. I hope they're not all doomed I agree. Monkey's site is one of the few genuinely funny sites on the internet. The infuriating thing is Dem' possibly doesn't even know about the impending loss of ftp as - I think - he only has sporadic internet access. This morning I phoned through to Orange, and after the usual endless menus and being passed around, I ended up speaking to someone who had a malfunctioning phone which - added to his accent - meant neither of us could understand the other, and the conversation was just a repeated "You can hear me now?" until I finally rang off in exasperation. This, remember, from a company who built their reputation selling telephones... So I phoned up Sky. I'll be absolutely gutted if Monkey's site disappears. Hope Dem' has it all backed up. I've put all the Phibes slideshows on one Freewebs page now. Definitely impressed with that place. So easy!

Two bleedin' weeks of treking down to the library just to check on the latest "advice" from the accursed Or*ng* think tank and I was resigned to it: the only hope I had of getting back online was to ignore their increasingly clueless troubleshooting solutions and go for the big RETURN TO FACTORY SETTINGS. It's a crazy stunt to pull but it might just work!
And It has! It took me sixteen 'king hours but now I'm back and up for mischief!
Sadly I lost ALL my f**kserve emails in the process due to a bodged back up but other that, no huge disasters.
Anyhow ....
Rog: I've not got this at all clear but I guess we'll know soon enough: are the sites just gonna disappear or is it a case of them staying put, but us not being able to update them? I'm not worried about the Vault 'site' as that ended it's days serving as a front-end for all the WordPress stuff, but A Haunted Dolls House would be a sad loss. Monkey has been planning a switch to WordPress for some time, so i'm sure he'll get his paws busy with that if the worst comes to the worst!
And yes: you were missed. Welcome back!

Monkey has been planning a switch to WordPress for some time, so i'm sure he'll get his paws busy with that if the worst comes to the worst! Dem, the best way to answer this is to copy and paste an email I received from Orange last night. First, here was the question I asked them: "With the closing down of the FTP option, what will happen to the existing FTP sites? Some of those made by myself and others represent months or years of work - I've only been notified in the past 2 days of the closing down of FTP. "A friend in London can't get a connection through Orange, though he's built sites in Freeserve/Wannado days - so he can hardly have been notified. Frankly, the new site maker doesn't look as if it would be of a lot of use to me. Why should anyone pay for 'upgrades' when they're getting less for their money? "Repeat: What will happen to existing FTP sites?" This was their reply: "Dear Orange customer, "Thank you for your message. "The former Orange website service has been replaced by the Orange Website Maker, which is based on an entirely different technology. Orange Website Maker enables you to produce multimedia-rich, Flash-based websites through an easy-to-use graphical interface. Due to this change, it is no longer possible to interface the webspace via FTP and upload HTML content. All editing takes place via the graphical editing interface in your web browser after logging into your Orange Website Account. "If you're an advanced user and you merely used the old Orange website service as webspace to upload the content you had authored in an external tool and you didn't really use the old sitebuilder tool, you might prefer using a new webhosting package to upload your existing site over using Website Maker to build a new one. In this case, please check whether the NetBenefit offer is of any interest to you: orange.easily.co.uk/index.php3?exe=virtualhostingI hope this information helps. -- Best regards, Ralf Hentschel Orange Website Maker Support MAGIX AG Postfach 200914 01194 Dresden Germany" ****** So if you want a real website, you have to buy a domain. It's not a great deal of money, but why should we have to do this? They appear to have absolutely no consideration for their customers. Orange seem to be offering less and less for the money. I still haven't learned whether the websites will become simply 'frozen' or deleted. I'm changing to Sky. Thanks. It's nice to be back. I honestly don't know what got into me in past weeks. Anyway, back to it.
