Superb book. It is a lenghty read with plenty of padding. And he tends to go over the same things again but the book is damn right creepy. Herbert does ghost story wonderfully and I believe its his strength. He also gives us a quaint old English feel which sadly we are loosing in books nowadays. I mean they have an old style 70s 80s feel to them too.
The subject matter of this is also disturbing too. Shame Herbert is not prolific now as we need more from him. The fella writes a great novel.

Well Ive got SWAMP, ZOMBIE and ANTS and to be truthful I found them pretty poor and recall being bored shitless with them. I have MORGOW too (recent buy on the cheap) but after bad times with the above Im loathe to read it.

The best Herbert in my opinion. The orgy piece leaves and impression with everyone I think. Some great parts. Like the mass riot at the footy game. And the creepy bit were the cop looks through the letterbox and sees the poor legless doggy. All in all a scary book. The cover always scared me as a nipper too.

Ive got worms......No not like that. I mean I managed to pick it up this week. It always seemed to evade me but thankfully I'm raring to. Only a skinny thing so it should'nt take that long.
And the cover is rather dull considering the subject matter but hey ! there ya go.

Wonderful book of tales and along with Night Shift probably his best. Of Course The Mist is the pick of the bunch. Perhaps his greatest short novella. Made into a good film....As was The Raft which turned up as the 2nd tale in the Creepshow 2 film.
Gramma and The Monkey are wonderfully creepy and are superb for a dark night read.
There are a few clunkers like The Wedding Gig and Mrs Todds Shortcut that offer little or nothing. But purely because of The Mist this book is a mustbuy.

Do you know Ive had this bugger for absolute years and never ever got round to readiing it. Always thought it would be kind of dull. But you have just pricked up my ears and now this will have to go on the already teetering huge "to read " pile.

Vortex of Horror : This is like a bizarre nightmare that someone has dreamt up. Not unlike a Lovecraft tale. Very surreal but enjoyable at that.
Schwartz : Awful.... What on earth is a dull story like this doing in a Horror book. Its more like Sci Fi . And incredibly stupid
The Rat Trap : Typical Pan fare. Nasty person gets his comupance. Not the greatest of stories but one to read and basically forget about.
The Hook : Love the end. Like a question mark indeed. Odd story of course but original to say the least
The Man and The Boy : This is horrible. Not written horrible but the subject matter. Its sadly a thing that happens today and reading a tale like this is very disturbing. A difficult read and quite frankly one that shocked me. Definetly the most horrid in the book.
Still have Strange Roots to read yet but to judge this volume I would say average.

Just to add , fans of the Pan horror series may want to pick up a back issue of no 7 of the mag as they did a piece on the books.
