I remembered the group. But don't know if this the song I'm thinking of.

Fotheringay is my favorite of Sandy Denny's bands. There were only together about a year although there was a beautiful vibe among the band members. They were sabotaged by this situation with Sandy's former producer. All the band members did continue to play together at various times for the rest of Sandy's life, and for many years beyond, too.

Fotheringay are lovely when Sandy Denny is singing but, in my opinion, not when Trevor Lucas is (this is coloured slightly by knowing that he took their child to his parents in Australia without telling her, albeit probably in part to protect the child, days before Denny's death). Luckily, as well as her work with the Strawbs and Fairport she left hours and hours of solo recordings, some wonderful, many very sad, and none with quite the voice she'd had at the very beginning. Do you ever go to Cropredy, Helrunar? Am hoping to go with a friend this year for the first time since 1984, though I've seen Fairport since then, but would like to see the last night slot where they find whoever is currently the finest female voice in folk and ask her to take Denny's place.

Hi Sam,
I'm not really coherent or rational on the subject of Sandy Denny--I wasn't introduced to her work until I was almost 40 years old, but I fell hard for her voice. Her work feels very personal for me.
Her voice did change but yesterday while making breakfast I was listening to the acoustic recording of the song "Moments" from what may have been her final session in the studio, and her voice still moves me just as deeply at the end as it does at the beginning. She went through a lot in her brief life.
I've only been over to the UK once, back in 1995. I don't think Cropredy would be my scene but I'm glad it was a good time for you.
I keep thinking I should plan another trip over, perhaps to coincide with one of the book fairs so I could perhaps meet some other Vault regulars. We few, we happy few clutching our beloved mouldering paperbacks.
cheers, Hel.

Her voice did change but only from perfection to near perfection, and I wholly agree with you that some of her last work is also some of the most moving (so much so that you have to be careful what mood you're in when you listen to it, no? Not to mention Meet on the Ledge becoming such a popular song for funerals)

We will meet in the sweet light of dawn. As the Baker Street train spills your pain all over your new dress, and the symphony sounds underground put you under duress, well don't you squeal as the heel grinds you under the wheel. Life's a long song. Life's a long song. Life's a long song. But the tune ends too soon for us all. Truly excellent music. One that hasn't dated. Or maybe I'm Living In The Past...

Truly excellent music. One that hasn't dated. Or maybe I'm Living In The Past... It's true, it doesn't date, only we do. I guess we're too old to rock and roll (though I have to admit I'm considering saving up for a motorbike again). I find the Kinks' Thank you for the Days similarly lovely and evocative of life lived. I remember having both that and the Tull one in the background when videoing my children as toddlers, for those reasons

Hi Sam, Have you heard "Samantha Carol Fragments" by the super-obscure band Benjamin Delaney Lion? I think it was either on Dust on the Nettles or Electric Eden: www.youtube.com/watch?v=I57BMoe83DEThis band's album Satori is now on youtube and well worth hearing. I think there were only one or two tracks on that that failed to catch fire for me. cheers, Hel.

Hi Helurnar, I know that track from Dust on the Nettles, but no others by them. Thank you for the recommendation, I will seek out the rest of the album on YouTube
