Bravo, you've sold this one to me. Cynical misanthropic hack exploiting hippie counterculture is always a good look, with some good Manson vibes in there. Have never read a non-Richard Allen Moffat book - I have 'Terror Of The Seven Crypts' at home but haven't yet got round to it. Might try Amazon for this one.

Found another EC Tubb for cheap the other day...'S.T.A.R. Flight' on 5 Star, 1969. I'll save it for you Craig!

Have you ever read Croak, Bushwick? 'Fraid not HP, though I've read a few John Halkins and Richard Lewises and the like. It definitely fits the bill for the sort of book I'd enjoy. What's your favourite 'animals on the rampage' book HP? Tough question. Maybe excluding GNS would make it easier, in which case, I'd say 'Slither' by John Halkin. (damn, i took this fucker off topic again...!)

Sorry, I'm mixing up two books. The freaky scene I'm talking about is from 'Savage' by Paul Boorstin.

Jesus Christ, your avatar is Mr Noseybonk. One of the most terrifying things ever on British TV...the stuff of nightmares...

I was also quite taken aback by a very OTT sex scene featuring breast milk.

Old Charles has a touch of the Peter Lorre about him there.

Only just noticed this thread. Good work! I really, really want this book now. Saw it on abebooks a bit back, think it worked out at about a tenner inc postage.
(on a related LJ tip, I picked up one of him and his son's American Football books at a chazza in Cumbria over the weekend. A prime example of this site turning me into some weird obsessive completist!)

This is absolutely bugger-all help to you Craig, but I recall seeing some of these recently but not buying them. When I went to Manchester recently I definitely saw some of these, either at Paramount Books (think it was there actually), Shudehill Books or perhaps the stall near the Arndale.
Think your best bet will be Paramount. The bloke was very helpful - they have no website, but give him a call/drop him a line and tell him what you're after and he'll dig through his stock. They're only open Fri/Sat so maybe a letter would be best.
Prices were pretty reasonable for most things, between 1-2 pounds usually.
(I also remember he had shitloads of old Dr Who novels, if anyone's arsed)

Well I never! Thanks steve. I'll give his site further investigation. Much kudos to him for using his own name. Judging by the guy's background, all the highly-detailed weapon spec stuff (which is all Greek to me but I like it) must be pretty accurate.
I bet the C.A.D.S. books aren't half as funny as Doomsday Warrior.

Some good Cold War-era nuke-obsessed hardcore would go very well with these books. A bit of Discharge would fit the pace and mood. "CAN YOU HEAR THE SOUND OF THE ENORMOUS DOOR SLAMMING IN THE DEPTHS OF HELL?"

I've nearly finished Phoenix 2: Ground Zero, and it's a lot more full-on that the first, which is quite a feat. Andrea Dworkin would turn in her grave. I don't think it gets nastier/more sexist/written with more irresponsible juvenile relish than this. The sex scenes are written like porn, rough as hell and pretty hard to defend. You would never expect material like this to lie beneath such a generic, innocuous cover. Would be very interested to know who really wrote this, as 'David Alexander' is blatantly a pseudonym. I think it'll be one of those no-one wants to admit to, like 'Eat Them Alive'. Justin, please prove us wrong!

George Gilman - Edge: Apache Death (is this the first one?, not read any) 50p You'll love it HP, it'll blow your socks off. Probably my favourite Edge, arguably the most violent and OTT of the whole series.

Trip to Manchester yesterday, picked up a few bangers:
'Cutthroat- Michael Slade (NEL) two old Brak The Barbarian books coz they were cheap 'Check Force: 100 Megaton Kill' - Ralph Hayes (Manor) (some Executioner-type business featuring rugged gun-toting dudes in polonecks on the cover) 'Simon Rack: Earth Lies Sleeping' and 'Starcross' - Laurence James (Sphere) (very happy to have found these) and 'Horrorscope#1: The Green Flames of Aries' by Robert Lory (Pinnacle) (with a lovely John Holmes cover, which I wouldn't know was by John Holmes if it wasn't for Johnny's interview in PF, cheers!)
I would say, MCR seems OK for second-hand books. A lot better than Leeds. There's a stall on the street kinda near the Arndale that has loads of stuff, you'd need a good few hours there as a lot of the thinner paperbacks are all piled on top of one another.
You've also got the Empire Exchange, near Piccadilly, which is a treasure trove of all things second-hand. Massive, too, but I didn't hit such a result there with books this time. Shudehill Books as well, which is one of those old-school places (like Empire) with a comprehensive porn section at the back. Real British history, these places, and it's reassuring to see they're still surviving, for now at least. There's loads of porno shops in Manchester actually...I see this a good gauge of a city's 'rude health'!
( Manchester seems to be avoiding the uniform gentrification/McDonaldisation of UK city centres. Or at least putting up a good fight. It's been blander since the IRA bomb and the death of the Corn Exchange, but there's still independent life there.)
The real revelation was Paramount Books on Shudehill. This place is big, with a good 'proper literature' section, a wall full of SF (with bits of horror mixed in), loads of comics, old Fangorias, Monster Mags, movie stills...stacks of stuff. The proprietor has two prosthetic arms (not that this has any bearing on anything) and only opens on Fridays and Saturdays. God knows what his rent must be...I'm guessing he bought the place back when it will have been cheap. Had a good chat with him. He says he's been in the business for 30 years and has 2 more floors of books not on display...many gems there, horror etc.
(There is a wire rack next to the counter containing fruit. He said to me 'take an orange with you, or a lime'. I said, thanks, I will. I forgot and was about to leave, and he insisted that i take an orange. I must look unhealthy.)
