Seemed like a good time to revive this thread from the old incarnation of BHAH, since THE GUARDIAN has just given away a free DVD of Hector Babenco's KISS OF THE SPIDER WOMAN (1985). The disc contained a rather ugly NTSC transfer running 120m 23s at 24 fps (the sleeve mistakenly lists a running time of 116 minutes), letterboxed at the correct 1.85:1 ratio, but not anamorphically enhanced. There were no extras, though optional English subtitles for the hard of hearing were provided. For all its flaws, this transfer looked a lot better than the one previously released on VHS in the UK by Palace Video (running 115m 25s at 25 fps), which was cropped to full-screen.
But what really makes this disc noteworthy is the fact that, astonishing as it may sound, KISS OF THE SPIDER WOMAN has never previously been issued on DVD anywhere, thus making this among the most collectible freebie discs to have emerged so far.

The really strange thing is that I was thinking about that very film only yesterday!

Sean is clairvoyant, you know, and telepathic too. No, really! He and his daughter talk to each other without opening their mouths. It's quite disturbing when one realises what's happening. I'll check out the old thread before I comment, but we've had some great stuff free.

Fellini's LA DOLCE VITA is free with THE OBSERVER next Sunday. That's today, if anyone missed Brad's post first time. Probably worth getting just for the Anita Ekberg footage (I always bring things down to the lowest common denominator). I thought this was the one with the horde of Hell's Angels riding into Rome at night, but it's actually the one with the figure of Christ being flown over the skyscrapers under a helicopter by day. Just shows how much I've forgotten. Both great films, anyway. A DVD of MY LEFT FOOT is free with today's MAIL ON SUNDAY. And Bernardo Bertolucci's marvellous THE SHELTERING SKY is free with next Sunday's THE OBSERVER. Thanks for the heads-up on these, Brad.

I thought this was the one with the horde of Hell's Angels riding into Rome at night. That's Fellini's ROMA. THE OBSERVER's disc of LA DOLCE VITA is a gorgeous, anamorphically enhanced widescreen transfer, taken from a restored print.

It's too long since I've seen Roma! Picked this up today. Satyricon and Amarcord are OK, but you can poke Eight And A Half

Does anyone remember back to mid last year when The Sun/News of the World was giving away, Night of the Living Dead Dawn of the Dead and Halloween among others? Shocked I was, I tell ya.
Forgot to get a copy of Dawn to see if it had the 'exploding head' scene in it or if it had been cut - like it had in the Dead Trilogy box set that came out many moons ago. That pee'd me RIGHT off.....

That pee'd me RIGHT off..... Hi Johnny, I'll add my welcome here. In the 'Seventies I went to Germany to find work, and one of the films I was able to enjoy in the cinema with little knowledge of the language was Dawn of the Dead. I saw it again recently on TV and it's still a good one. Not too impressed by the third in the series, and reviews of The Zombie Diaries have been mixed - I think Paul Kane mentioned liking it in his Pantechnicon review (?) but Jonathan Ross seemed disappointed. Exploding head? I'm always complaining about forgetting things. I remember a head severed by a helicopter blade in Dawn, but the only exploding heads I recall were in Scanners and Fury!

"Exploding head?"
There was indeed an exploding head in DAWN OF THE DEAD, but it was cut out of the original UK theatrical release and all the early video releases by our beloved state censor. The film was finally passed uncut a few years back, and has even been shown uncut on BBC2.
I thought it was pretty funny that THE SUN gave away a free DVD of THE EVIL DEAD. Back in the 1980s, this was one of the 'video nasties' that THE SUN campaigned against!

Another bit that was missing from earlier releases of 'Dawn of the Dead' was the bit where two zombie children leap up to go munching on someone, only to be shot repeatedly... (it's on more recent DVDs)
