Index AcknowledgementsI used to have 50 Great Ghost Stories (+ 50 Great Horror Stories) it used to be one of my favorites as a teen. True or not, the writing was good.... Only got this quite recently, read through a huge chunk of it while recovering from the most virulent strain of hangover-induced man-flu ever recorded, and enjoyed it far more than anticipated (the more plausible a "true ghost story" the duller it is in my experience. Nothing much happens.). Fortunately, Mr. Canning's cabal realise they are in the entertainment business, and if a particular well-authenticated case needs tarting up a little for excitement's sake, so be it. Not that the famous likes of Borley, Glamis and 50 Berkley Square need added drama (my favourite version of the latter remains Aidan Chambers' account in Haunted Houses). As mentioned on previous thread J. Wentworth Day's The Club Of Dead Men rewrites Arthur 'Ingulphus' Gray's The Everlasting Club as a true story (might well be for all I know).

Eisner Ronald Seth - The Ghost in Two Halves: "... there were several among the older servants and people who live in the glen who claim that they have seen these ghostly legs not only wandering about the castle, but in the avenue of limes and the graveyard. I must say it is a slight relief to know there is an upper half also." Meggernie Castle, Glen Lyon, Perth. Ghosts, plural, of the Mistress Menzies slain by her chieftain husband in a fit of unwarranted jealously. To conceal his crime, the killer sawed the corpse in half to fit inside a chest of drawers, then sealed shut the room to prevent discovery. Months later, he put it about that, tragically, his beloved wife had died suddenly while visiting Italy. Menzies problems began when he attempted to transfer the now putrescent remains to the kirkyard for burial ... Michael & Mollie Hardwick - Ghosts of the Mutiny: Christmas, circa 1890. Since the Palace at Hisar came under British control, Colonel Robinson has found it impossible to retain servants once they've met a few of the resident ghosts. During the rebellion, the Rajah offered sanctuary to a party of white civilians, only to have them butchered by his soldiers. He also trained elephants to trample surplus wives. Also featured, Mrs Torres nightmare premonition of her daughter's horrible murder by Sepoys, and how a ghost intervened to save Captain X's wife at Meerut. Eisner Ronald Seth - The Ghost of Nance: On the eve of marriage to faithful Tom Driffield, fastest coachman on the Great North Road, Nance, the prettiest girl in Sheriff Hutton, ran off with a handsome stranger, who, she soon discovers to her cost, is not only a highwayman but a bigamist. Cast out ill and with newborn child to perish on the moor, Nance is chanced upon by the true love she jilted who drives her and her baby to an inn. She dies promising to come to his aid in times of crisis. Frank Usher - Hauntings Royal: Includes Anne Boleyn, sat, head in lap, inside a phantom carriage drawn by headless horses, etc; Catherine Howard fleeing the spectral soldiers sent to seize her in the gallery of Hampton Court Palace; Margaret, Countess of Salisbury, messily hacked to death by the executioner on Tower Hill in May 1541. A murdered princes free zone as article primarily concerns the victims of Henry VIII.

Dismemberment, "putrescent remains", what's not to like?

Frank Usher - Ghosts of Ancient Egypt: Count Louis Hamon, the severed hand of Queen Nefertiti, and the cursed sarcophagus. Also, the that befell Lord Carnavon and fellow defilers of Tutankhamun's tomb. "Many other strange stories were told about this famous mummy-case. It was even said that the British Museum presented the unwanted thing to the New York Museum and sent it over on the ill-starred Titanic. But perhaps it is stretching things a little to blame the ancient Egyptians for that particular disaster." Frank Usher - The Ghosts Of Versailles: Visiting Petit Triamon in August 1901, English academics Miss Jourdain and Miss Moberly were seemingly transported back to Versailles as was in October 1789, two months on from the massacre at the Tuileries. Apparently this was a frequent occurrence, several independent witnesses having briefly looked upon a woman they recognise as Marie Antoinette in a woodland setting that had long ceased to be. An instance of recurring "telepathic time travel?"
