Harriet Esmond (John & Jean Burke) - The Florian Signet (William Collins Sons & Co, 1977, hc, this edition Coronet; Hodder & Stoughton, 1978, 252 pages) This is one of Burke's Romances or Gothics, hard to say without reading it. 'Romantic Suspense' could be an euphemism for Gothic, but the careful cover art says Regency Romance. It is quite long, 252 pages of small print. There were other novels under the pseudonym.

Doubt I could go the distance, but the cover art is lovely. Uncredited?

Doubt I could go the distance, but the cover art is lovely. Uncredited? It is on the backside, next to the price, but I couldn't decipher it. Even tried a failed G**le picture search, as it looks rather like some Edwardian painting and no actual cover art. Or is it the continent? The dress uniforms in the background look somehow pre WWI.

Heya Andy, it's John Burke. His wife Jean helped him write them.

Heya Andy, it's John Burke. His wife Jean helped him write them. Head hanging in shame. Why on earth did I write James? Thanks for noticing, Johnny! I changed it.

Easily done. Oh, and Dem, THE EYE STONES is a good jumping off point, suitably gothic.

Harriet Esmond (John & Jean Burke) - Darsham's Folly(Harper & Collins, 1974, this edition translation by Heyne Verlag, 1989)
This is a rather late addition to Heyne Publishing's "Romantic Thriller" imprint. Heyne was then the biggest paperback publisher, and this line specialised on Gothics. Since 1966 it presented all kinds of Gothics, from writers like Dorothy Eden, Victoria Holt to Virginia Coffman, Clarissa Ross and Edwina Marlowe on the other end of the literary quality. All featured classic Gothic covers, and as the didn't much care for trends, historical Gothics stood side by side with contemporary Gothics. There are even some rather obscure novels like the genre hopping horrorish books by Sandra Shulman. At times this selection can be a lot of fun, but they are hard to find and not well documented.
Burke's The Eye Stones was also translated for this edition.

I didn't read much, but can remember thinking them rather middle of the road. Competent and commercial, no doubt, but nothing special.

I looked Virginia Coffman up and found this cover, a version of the woman running away from the lonely house with a light in the window, but it has the added excitement of doing so through a graveyard. Something I haven't seen before. From goodreads.
