Douglas Clegg – Breeder (Pocket Books, 1990, 310 pages)
Cover: Jim Warren Cover found on the net. Thanks to the original scanner.Second novel of American writer Douglas Clegg.
Hugh and Rachel Adair move into a house gifted by Hugh's father. Its Hugh’s second marriage, he has just failed the bar examination while his wife had no problem with it. But Rachel just suffered as miscarriage. So it is not surprising that she hears a baby crying in Draper House. Which is impossible. Or is it? Draper House has a history of satanism and murder, and Hugh’s hated father Winston, also an attorney, is having a meltdown thanks to evil deeds in the past, being stalked by old bag-lady Mattie. This is a more controlled novel than Goat Dance, less characters, more focused. But the often feverish prose and some really disgusting scenes gives this an intense atmosphere. This is a cut above the usual Zebra novel of the time, and Clegg remained productive.
