From your viewing of these old magazines are there particular artists that you notice and like? Muriel A Broderick, The Witch Hunt 22 Nov. 1939 Erhard Amadeus-Dier, The Belated Guest 20 Nov. 1935 In no particular order, individual works by Leon Heron, Winifred C. Honey ( The Mischievous Monkey), Frederick Carter, Tony Castles The Vamp, Howard K Elcock (Daphne Du Maurier's The Terror) (all The Bystander); Gordon Nicoll ( God Rest You Merry Gentlemen), A K MacDonald ( Green Lady of Lacings) and A. Forestier ( The Ghost That Saved) in Illustrated London News; Sadly, post 1900, The Sketch ran their "novels in a nutshell" unadorned, although the frequently adorable photo covers & co compensate. We've not yet got to the prolific Phillip Mendoza, perhaps my favourite of the newspaper artists for his work on the stories that would eventually comprise The Evening Standard Book of Strange Stories (will sort out some examples, though from microfilm, so the quality not always too hot). A. K. Macdonald The Green Lady of Lacings, The Illustrated London News Christmas number, 22 November 1933. God Rest You Merry GentlemenErhard Amadeus-Dier - The Belated Guest 20 Nov. 1935 Winifred Duke - God Rest You Merry Gentlemen: 26 November 1927: illustrated by Gordon Nicoll E. F. Benson - Sea Mist: 20 Nov. 1935: illustrated by Jack M. Fauks The Witch Hunt 22 Nov. 1939 by Muriel A Broderick Facsimile pages: MediaFireText alternativeAttachments:God rest Sea Mist.pdf (219.89 KB)

The Illustrated London News, May 4, 1907 *** Spooks in Court: The Famous Ā£1000 Colley-Maskelyne Libel Case The legal sensation of the past week has been the case brought by Archdeacon Colley against Mr. Nevil Maskelyne for an alleged libel, inasmuch as Mr. Maskelyne, in an exposure of the Archdeacon's spiritualistic visions, denied his right to his clerical title. Mr. Maskelyne claimed that Archdeacon Colley owed him Ā£1000 as the forfeit of a challenge to perform by mechanical means the mystery of a female spirit emerging from a man's side. This Archdeacon Colley alleged that he saw through the agency of Dr. Monck, the medium, and Dr. Alfred Russel Wallace corroborated the testimony. Twice every day at the St. George's Hall, Mr. Maskelyne and Miss Cassie Bruce produce a similar illusion mechanically. ā The Illustrated London News, May 4, 1907
