Like many others, I recall reading a great short story some years ago, and now, in my dotage, I not only can't recall the name of the story, I can't remember where I even read it! It's driving me crazy that I can't find it again! There seem to be a good number of holes in my memory about the specifics (names, places, etc) of the story, but I do remember a few specific details. The story goes back and forth regarding the time period, some of which is current, and some flashbacks are recent history. I recall details about the car that was a main character in the story, it's a hand-built hot rod, fixed up by a teenage boy who's a loner. The car is painted strawberry red with gold metal flake or veining. Police can't catch this car that runs at high speeds along the back roads, but disappears just before being caught the trap they set. Story written in the PoV of a reporter on assignment for the story of the police being regularly evaded by a crafty driver. Police traps get more and more elaborate, but they just can't catch the driver. The boy's girlfriend is sickly, and they just disappear one day. The families believe they just ran away together. There is an epilogue by the reporter gives details about the car eventually being found in a canal with two skeletons in it, but goes on to write about the police still trying to catch the wily driver. I've been looking for this story for years, and I am starting to think I've made it all up because I can't find it!!
Please help!

Yes, I know this story but unfortunately cannot recall either title or author. I think it features in one of the Alfred Hitchcock anthologies.

If it is a story in a Hitch collection; maybe you can find it in a Goodreads review of one of the anthologies; there's quite often a synopsis of each story. I just looked through Stories to Stay Awake By & A Baker's Dozen, nothing matches your description. Or you can check out the ones on Internet Arch*ve. Good luck!

"The Gold Cadillac" by Alfred Hitchcock and Mildred D. Taylor is what comes to mind, are you sure it was a hot rod and red?
