'Edgelands of Fear' is a forthcoming 50-story collection by David Huckvale and Simon J. Ballard. Having passed on the BHF Books torch to other capable hands, I thought that my brief yet productive stint as an anthology editor would be over - but Simon and David invited me aboard, and I've just completed several weeks of toil on this new project. David should be well-known to you as a renowned expert on film music, often appearing on Blu-ray extras to discuss movie scores in depth; Simon is a regular contributor to popular horror movie magazines, and I've previously edited his work in the pages of 'We Belong Dead'.
The 'edgelands' theme they have adopted proves to be a potent one - as a backdrop for their weird, mystical, often horrifying short stories, the authors have utilised run-down or abandoned/neglected aspects of Britain. Motor vehicle graveyards, disused funfairs, out of season coastal resorts, grim motorway service stations, empty warehouses, back-alley second hand book stores and treasure-filled musty antique shops, and many more crumbling or dilapidated environs, across which flit equally broken characters, some human, some not.
Their stories have been a pleasure to work on, not least in the way that they occasionally intertwine and cross-reference, giving a sense that 'this nation's changing face' (almost managed a Fall reference there!) is a cause for concern everywhere. Natural and ecological encroachment and what we might regard as 'destruction' - floods, sinkholes, woodland creatures in urban settings, etc - are all celebrated here, and while the book may read as a collection of horror tales to us mere humans, it probably doesn't if you are a river bursting its banks or a fox rummaging through someone's bins. Or if you are an ancient demon, or a fantastic earth-mother goddess.
I finished the full edit and final polish late last night, and we hope to have a cover design and full specs soon. 'Edgelands of Fear' (Simon J. Ballard & David Huckvale) will hopefully be available for purchase within weeks, possibly later this month.

Very much looking forward to this. Talented writers and keen intellects behind it.

I attended the book launch of this collection in Oxford last weekend, a fine, cosy event also attended by former Hammer Horror actress Judy Matheson and scriptwriter David McGillivray. A great day, and an impressive looking book which I'm due to dive into. I'll report back.
