I got this one from a Scholastic book fair as a 5th or 6th grader on the cusp of getting into 'real' horror. The Stephen King story was the first one I ever read and it left a big impression on me (it is presented unexpurgated, including language, at King's request--good on him!)
All of these stories were, I believe, originally published in
Read magazine, which was I think a Scholastic publication aimed at preteen reluctant readers. Presumably they thought that genre content would work. They did another volume,
Read To Survive or
Read for Your Life or something similar, which was adventure/survival stories; that one didn't interest me as much although I did read "Leningen Versus the Ants" in it.
I haven't read this in years but I still have my copy and I suspect I'd still enjoy it; need to dig it out of storage.
