Going down memory lane with the very first horror anthologies I encountered in grade school that weren't just "for kids"--well, they were, but they were packages of "adult" horror tales. In its first incarnation it hand a tasteful watercolor cover: But when I encountered it, the 1990s were in full swing, and so. . . Garish, isn't it? But effective; I always imagined that the 'thing' behind the wallpaper in 'The Yellow Wallpaper' looked like this ghoulish figure, which went a long way to making the story effective for me (as a 5th grader, the subtext of Victorian gender politics perhaps eluded me). So what's inside? 1 • The Signalman • (1866) • short story by Charles Dickens 23 • Man-Size in Marble • (1887) • short story by E. Nesbit 46 • The Yellow Wallpaper • (1942) • short story by Charlotte Perkins Gilman 73 • The Cigarette Case • (1910) • short story by Oliver Onions 96 • The Horla by Guy de Maupassant Not a bad taste for introducing kids to Victorian/Edwardian/pre-war horror.
