Two to look out for. #52 Edward Parnell [ed] - Eerie East Anglia: Fearful Tales of Field and Fen (British Library, Aug, 2024) A seaside honeymoon holiday is plagued by the mystery of bells which never stop ringing - and that which answers the call. Druidic rites and modernity spells disaster at a Norfolk golf course. An ancient relic found on the Suffolk coast summons a nightmarish entity to its discoverer.
A land of mind-stretching expanses, wide, yawning skies and the disorientating landscapes of the tidal fens, East Anglia has inspired a wide range of writers in the field of weird and uncanny fiction.
This new collection includes a wealth of tales from the past 130 years set in Norfolk, Essex, Suffolk and Cambridge by a host of authors including ghost tale luminaries M. R. James, Robert Aickman, E. F. Benson and Marjorie Bowen, alongside bright lights of modern weird writing. Insightful introduction and notes from Norfolk-based award-winning author Edward Parnell#53 Weird Walk [ed] - The Haunted Trail: Classic Tales of the Rambling Weird (British Library, Sept. 2024) A remarkable blood-soaked stranger upends the lives of two Lake District ramblers; a lonely tavern offers its guests something much more disturbing than a post-walk pint; a night hike on the Fens takes a terrifying turn when the fog rolls in.
From the darkly humorous to the chillingly sinister, tales of the haunted trail are as old as time. We have always travelled on foot and our worst fears have often accompanied us. Whether walking for pleasure or necessity, the ramblers of these classic stories trip across unseen boundaries, plotting routes towards the numinous, the uncanny and the plain evil.
Featuring fifteen pieces from an intrepid band of writers including Robert Aickman, Charlotte Riddell, M. R. James and many more, this new anthology is a haunting trail mate, guiding you into the wild unknown.Looks like they've also a selection of seance stories in the works.

#50. Elizabeth Dearnley [ed.] - Deadly Dolls: Haunting Tales of the Uncanny (British Library, May 2024) Elizabeth Dearnley - Introduction A Note from the Publisher
E. T. A. Hoffman - The Sandman Jerome K Jerome - The Dancing Partner Joan Aiken - Crespian and Clairan Adele Geras - The Doll Maker Brian Aldiss - Supertoys Last All Summer Long Vernon Lee - The Doll Daphne Du Maurier- The Doll Frederick E Smith - The Devil Doll Angela Carter - The Loves of Lady Purple Agatha Christie - The Dressmakers Doll Isabelle Cheung - Patchwork Dolls M. R. James - The Haunted Dolls' House Robert Aickman - The Inner Room Camilla Grudova - The Mouse Queen Blurb 'The doll wasn’t lying on the floor of the cage, but was standing against the padlocked door. And as the curtains parted it turned its face sharply towards me ….'
As mannequins, automata, effigies and dummies, dolls have haunted our imagination since ancient times, invoked throughout the years in literature and film as quintessential symbols of the uncanny.
In this collection of fourteen tales harking from 1817 to 2022, Elizabeth Dearnley presents a sinister troupe of unsettling playthings from the minds of E. T. A. Hoffmann, Daphne du Maurier, Angela Carter, Agatha Christie, Robert Aickman, Camilla Grudova and many more.
Including possessed puppets, artificial suitors and figures that blur the lines between human and doll, fresh nightmares await when the doors of the dolls’ house swing open and its denizens come out to play. Blurb via British Library bears little relation to that on Am*z*n.uk. TOC via Samantha van Buuren on Goodreads who also provides an enthused review.

The new Dorothy K Haynes book cover. Released on October 24th. Has some cracking unpublished stories. One of them I think may even become a Vault favourite.

Mains ed: HALLOWEIRD: CLASSIC STORIES FROM THE SEASON OF SAMHAIN (Oct 3rd, 2024)
Mag Ruhig
CONTENTS
POEMS:
Hallowe'en - John Mayne Halloween - Robert Burns Hallowe'en: Or a Tale of Terror - Revi 'Twas the Night of All Hallows - Geraldine
TALES
Vermundyn's Fate - R. Fryer Out of the Night - Elizabeth Phipps Train The Face in the Glass - Letitia Virginia Douglas 'Struther Kannock's Halloween - Edgar L. Wakeman The Phantom Ride: A Hallowe'en Ghost Story - Lyllian Huntley The Vow on Hallowe'en - Lyllian Huntley Harris The Banshee's Halloween - Hermine Templeton Kavanagh The Graveyard - Alphonse Courlander All Souls' Night - Eleanor Fitzgerald The Sword - Rachel Swete Macnamara Cockcrow Inn - Todd Robbins When Hell Laughed - Flavia Richardson All Souls' - Edith Wharton Moonlight-Starlight - Virginia Layefsky The New House - Elizabeth Walter The Grove - Mary Williams
Really happy with this book, have re-used Graveyard, Souls Night and The Sword from REMEMBER THE DEAD AT HALLOWEEN AND CHRISTMAS (2019) as that book sold a handful of copies and I want those stories out to a wider readership as I love them. Also printed The Phantom Ride for what I believe is its first time since initial publication and written about Lyllian Huntley Harris in Weird Tales and Peter Haining passing her off as Dorothy Macardle. All good gun, and look at that cover! The poem by Revi is one of my favourite things ever. For a poem written in the 1800s, it ends on a very nasty note.

The British Library weird stuff is shaping up to be a brilliant collection. Mr Mains' new one looks like a marvellous addition. And getting the Weird Walk people to edit a book of rambling stories is an inspired move too.

Wishing you health and happiness. cheers, Steve Heya Steve, Got my heart operation on Wednesday - so it'll either be good news or bad news. If it's bad, I'm glad Halloweird will be my last book, and a posthumous release so close to my death! Woohoo! If I am around, there will be much more to come!

Also, Johnny, I am super excited for The Weird Tales of Dorothy K. Haynes, since I was so impressed by the couple of tales anthologized by Chetwynd-Hayes in those 70s books. I look forward very much to reading your essay about Haynes. Intriguing!
cheers, Steve
