Newbie here and I have almost given up hope on finding this book. Almost. This was a great book, but I have forgotten all except the plot. In England, a boy (possibly recently bereaved - mum?) starts a new school. He attends a portacabin classroom outside the main building. He is bullied by an older boy from a different class. The reader comes to realise that the class is made up of ghosts of children who died in an accident on the autobahn on a school trip the year or so before. The teacher and the children are the ghosts of those who died. It turns out that the bully is the older brother of one of the victims and the story is about coming to terms with loss and grief and moving on. It’s a British author I’m fairly sure, and definitely UK based as it’s set in Primary School. If anyone can help, I would be so so grateful. My poor brain…

It's not registering with me at all, but will give it a shot. Do you remember about the cover? Illustration or photo? Was it a paperback?

I have no idea. But I did a web search on the phrase "portacabin school ghosts" (never having before heard the neologism "portacabin," also found as "portakabin") and I found this entry which includes a tiny image of an imaginative painting entitled "the ghost story" fannycornforth.blogspot.com/2012/02/ooooh-ghosties.htmlNothing to your purpose, alas, but I thought it was an amusing little snippet. I believe there are a number of stories about ghost children in a schoolroom; "The Dark Boy" by August Derleth comes to mind. H.

It’s very frustrating as this was such a well-written book with a lovely message. Thank you so much for taking the time to reply.

Was it a young adult book? Can you remember how long ago you read it? I read it about 25 years ago; probably more. It was more a children’s book than for young adults. I appreciate all your help ☺️
