B. P. R. D. - Plague of Frogs written by Mike Mignola, artwork by Guy Davis (Dark Horse Comics, 2004, five-issue miniseries) The long-running story-arc Plague of Frogs started with this mini series. Mignola developed elements introduced in his first Hellboy story Seed of Destruction. Basically a fungus send by Sadu-Hem, one of the Lovecraftian entities which form one of the cornerstones of the Hellboy universe, transforms people into Frog monsters. The B. P. R. D. are sent to investigate and stumble upon a cult in Michigan, while fishman Abe Sapien is searching for his origins. In the further issues the plague gets out of hand with no happy end in sight. Written by Mignola and drawn by Guy Davis who basically did most of the next few years of art, this first chapter is a well done start. It manages a nice balance of action and atmospheric horror, using familiar horror tropes like abandoned coastal villages, tentacled monsters, ghosts and paranormal investigators, while building its mythology. While you can't deny the influence of superhero-books, it maintains the horror aspect.
These are two random pages of the story. One is a fight, the other a dream sequence. It gives a good impression of the art of this book.
