B. P. R. D. - Hollow Earth written by Mike Mignola, Christopher Golden & Tom Sniegoski, artwork by Ryan Sook (Dark Horse Comics, 2002, three-issue miniseries) The B. P. R. D. is the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense. A spin-off from the Hellboy comic book series, it is about the organisation Hellboy at some point in the narrative leaves. It ran from 2002 to 2019 and basically told an ongoing story with a definite end, but not as the usual monthly comic, but as a series of many miniseries. The cover shown above is from the omnibus edition, collecting the first miniseries. Basically these were at first stand-alone adventures, often written by other writers and not Mignola himself. The series universe building started with the story-arc Plague of Frogs. Hollow Earth, the first one, also created some story-elements which later served as the starting point of many other stories. The plot has Liz Sherman, the pyrokinetic, traveling to mystic Agartha to get a grip on her powers. After her soul gets abducted by some awakend creatures from underground, Hyperboreans, her collegues Abe Sapien the Fishman, Roger the Golem and Johann Kraus the Ectoplasmic Man follow her to rescue her. Kraus was created for this story and later became one of the leading characters of the series. He even was used in the second Hellboy movie. Hollow Earth is a well-done story which combines unashamedly a lot of old pulp tropes. The mysterious Eastern monastery - a hello to The Shadow, Weird Tales or Doctor Strange -, the myth of Agartha, the Hollow Earth and more.
