When I first saw it I thought/guessed it was German for unknown, but see the spelling is wrong "unbekannt". For some reason, I rarely wonder if an unknown word might be Dutch....

Yes, it's Scots for "unknown". Derived from the Dutch word onbekend, which also means unknown, but is pronounced unbekent. In Dutch onbekend also means obscure, strange, arcane, esoteric, dark - you know the drill.
