Never seen Emanuelle. Agree about TV drama being better in the 70s. The first Emanuelle is not bad, enough fodder for a class of todays armchair sociologists to get a good workout. The real crime of Zeta One is that there is not decent BD avaiable. Is it a good sf movie? Heavens, no! It is a silly wannabe nudie cutie without real nudies which tries to dib its toe in a pond into it didn't could get immersed because of the times and the market.

The first Emanuelle is not bad I was talking of course about Arsan's that is to say Jaeckin's Emmanuelle, not about some comedy I didn't know even existed.

Charles Hawtrey was in films with a famous British comedian of the 1930s and 1940s, Will Hay. I think it's often clever comedy. Oh! Mr Porter is a classic of its type. Will Hay was a man of many talents; not just a very successful comedy film actor, he was also a keen amateur astronomer (he discovered The Great White Spot feature on Saturn) and a keen aviator - he gave flying lessons to Amy Johnson.

Apart from the 1992 Carry on Columbus, Carry on Emanuelle was the last of the 'classic' series, though it stinks by all accounts. I haven't seen the other Emanuelle either

I agree. Will Hay's films are classics. I knew about his astronomical interests and discoveries but not about him giving lessons to Amy Johnson--wow!

What did people think? I quite enjoy these old shows, they are a different pace to modern comedy, and the jokes aren't forced, they are built around the characters. My favourite bit was the mistletoe, wasn't that nice. Did you recognise the Colonel?

Yes, I enjoyed that. I watched the series when it was first broadcast, though I don't recall this particular Christmas episode. Peggy Mount was the kind of female character actress that used to be quite common; other examples would be Irene Handl and Pat Coombs. Talking of Coombs, I believe she and Mount were great friends and starred together in the sitcom You're only Young Twice, where they played residents in a retirement home battling against the staff.
The Colonel was John Le Mesurier, forever associated with Sgt. Wilson in Dad's Army.

Ralph was played by Keith Marsh, whose most popular role was perhaps Jacko in Love thy Neighbour.

Someone suggest a sitcom to watch. It must be old though.

I'm still going to watch a sitcom, as I'm free all through Christmas and New Year. I'll look now.

I'm still here. It's a bit late and this is longer than normal, but I'm all prepared in bed, hair all combed, so I'll give it a go! I read the premise. It's an odd one:
In his will Joshua Pledge bequeathed a large sum of money to his son and daughter, but only if they stay together for five years at his small pickle business. But the two siblings don't see eye to eye. Let's give it a go shall we? I think we should!
It's Nearest and Dearest! From 1969.
