Not so much a book of the film as a book about a season of films... As part of that generation for whom BBC2's legendary Horror Double Bill seasons on the late '70s and early '80s were an introduction to so many wonders, Michael Galley's book was a very welcome find. Taking the 1977 season - titled Dracula, Frankenstein - and Friends! - as its basis, it looks at the films affectionately but not uncritically, using them as a jumping off point to discuss - among other things - politics, class, love, obsession, friendship, the changing face of television, and growing up as a horror fan. Intelligently written, while never taking itself too seriously or seeking to be a definitive guide to the films, it's a personal view of a genre, and while I came to the Horror Double Bills a year after the author, so many of the experiences he records chime so closely with my own, it felt like he was detailing elements of my own life.
