Down Bound Train by Bill Garnett ( Doubleday, 1973)
Five people, traveling together on a luxury train, who think they're on a vacation from their wearying lives:
REv. SULLIVAN STAYMORE: a priest who had eccentric and highly personal notions of love, sin and retribution.
ANN CRoss : a poor country girl who had risen to the top of the advertising world by trading on her own virtues—and on other's vices.
BILL ARMSTRONG: aself-indulgent young man who had been forced to take on a bizarre business deal to maintain his standard of living.
ROBERT LATIMER: a doctor of little ambition and less repute,he had devised an ingenious plan for ending his joyless marriage—but his daughter beat him to it.
FELICTTY LATIMER: at the age of ten, she had developed sensitivities that most adults can only imagine, committed acts that they would never dare— and she was more than eager to suffer the consequences.
Confined in a fiat-class railway coach, they gradually learned more about each other, and about their increasingly strange journey, than they would ever want to know.
