Thanks, folks! I just read an entry about author F. Paul Wilson online. It's amazing that I've lived 63 years in blissful ignorance of "Repairman Jack" and other massive franchises produced by this person.

"The Tomb" is a very fun adventure with non-replicated monsters

Wilson is one of those writers who you either love or think just meh. I read one a long time ago, wasn't impressed much and never looked back. Normaly I am drawn to one man universe builders, always fascinates me. But this kitchen sink approach to thriller and the supernatural was not for me. Of course one could argue that the character of the fixer has its roots in pulp and is the successor of heroes like The Shadow. Still Jack didn't work for me.
I saw The Keep also a long time ago. More because I was a Michael Mann fan after Miami Vice and especially Crime Story than I was interested in the story. I have zero recollection of it. But I know that at the time I wasn't aware of the circumstances of the movie.

I only read Wilson's book because of the movie. I was wondering why he had such a low opinion about movie given what his subsequent film adaptations were And it turned out to be a sight to behold
I read The Keep before I saw the film, and have been quite flabberghasted at the reputation the film has garnered. Although I like Michael Mann's films, and Tangerine Dream. The Keep's the only F. Paul Wilson book that ever interested me; I re-read it about 2 yrs ago (read first a few decades ago) & it was still great. No interest in seeing the movie version or any Repairman Jack books/movies.

But I know that at the time I wasn't aware of the circumstances of the movie. No, me neither. I thought it was a bit "weird", but I think I just put that down to deliberate artiness, and it didn't really seem so out of step with a lot of other horror/fantasy of the time. I think I have only seen it once again since that, but that was also a few years ago now (must have been on TV - I originally saw it on video, not long after it was released). I remember thinking that Ian McKellen was pretty good in it - it was probably the first thing I ever saw him in.

Originally the finished film was around three and a half hours long. Initially it was cut to two hours length, but then the studio lopped out another thirty minutes. My view is that this badly truncated film is still gloriously atmospheric, but oh! I would love to see the uncut original.

I may have read The Tomb around the same time, but can't remember much about it. I do remember reading some early short stories of his that were great - 'Soft' was one, which gets anthologised a lot, and there was a really good one that I think was by him that appeared in Night Cry about a monster or alien living in an attic and the owner's attempts to trap it - he thinks its rats or possums or something.
