Ok, I thought I'd start this now, even though there is a week to go, as I'm bored and none of my admirers are available to keep me amused. It's the HALLOWEEN BALL! I've booked the Vault Working Men's Club concert room for Halloween and I hope you will all show up. What you have to do is think of a character from a story or book or film or comic you would dress as. The more obscure the better I think. Don't say yet, wait until closer to the time. Add a picture if you can or a link to one so we get some idea. I'm going to do a quiz too! How good is that. Well when I say I, I mean I'm going to swipe questions from the Internet, as I have no actual knowledge myself, but I'll make them obscure. I'll do a film/TV round, a literature round, a Halloween knowledge round, and you can see how well you do. Exciting times!

I just realised the quiz might have been a bad idea. I'm clueless when it comes to horror knowledge. What have I got myself into?

I know I said I was leaving (again), but I thought I would make a brief appearance today to wish everyone a happy Halloween. Did you have any trick or treaters? We did. Not many though. Here is my costume choice: I know nothing about the series but isn't it a nice costume? Here is the picture quiz I promised, I'll put it up as I said I would and it would be a shame not to. Can you name the films? Don't put your answers up until tomorrow, so everyone has a chance to guess! Here they are: Number 1 Number 2 Number 3 Number 4 Numbers 5 and 6 are interesting. Perhaps one of these influenced the other? But can you name both films? Number 7 Number 8 Number 9 And finally Number 10 Please give answers tomorrow, but you can say how many you got. Please discuss tomorrow. I'll be off now, best wishes and hugs to you all. Strive to be happy!

I've just come back in from nailing up the last trick or treaters along the drive here at Shrink Towers to be greeted with a fine selection of photographs. Very appropriate....

Nice selection, Princess. I'm glad you ended with a photo of Mary Poppins. In one of the stories, Her birthday was said to fall on Hallowe'en.
cheers, Hel

Here is my costume choice: Wonderful costume and truly regal posture. I glad to see the muscular man from picture 4)

Is anyone having a bash at the quiz?
1) Vampire Circus 2) Les Yeux Sans Visage - immortalised in song by Billy Idol, under it's English title 3) Quatermass & The Pit 4)The Keep 5) Planet Of The Vampires 6) Alien 7) I think this is known under loads of different names. I know it as Mask Of The Demon. Or was it The Mask Of Satan? 8) Night Of The Living Dead 9) The Black Cat 10) I've not a clue about this...

I knew most of them apart from The Keep, and I also don't know the film (or TV show) that Princess's costume shot is from. In the US Mask of the Demon/Satan is known as Black Sunday--maybe the best Gothic horror film of all time, at least in terms of visual artistry.
Picture 10 is a puzzle to me as well.
cheers, Hel

I only read Wilson's book because of the movie. I was wondering why he had such a low opinion about movie given what his subsequent film adaptations were And it turned out to be a sight to behold

I read The Keep before I saw the film, and have been quite flabberghasted at the reputation the film has garnered. Although I like Michael Mann's films, and Tangerine Dream.

Some films receive public ridicule, deservedly or not. The visage of Molasar was created by the French comic artist Enki Bilal
he likes this type of appearance

If one of you feels like explaining the movie to me, I'd be interested. I don't feel like looking it up online. I have never heard of the movie so know nothing of the controversy.
"Red and gold and Hallowe'en has passed us by"--Sandy Denny's words from 1975.

A slightly art-house adaptation of Paul Wilson, about a Nazi battalion which confronts a vampire who looks like an alien. The film is severely cut or not finished, therefore everything is perceived in a meditative key at the level of intuition. It have memorable moments

Yes - trad vampire turns out to be something else (though I can't quite remember what exactly). "Art house", yet at the same time "MTV music video" in style. Also in some ways stylistically similar to Highlander (which came out three years later), I think. I had read the book before seeing the film and thought the book better, though the film definitely has its good points (and is quite trippy in places). The final pic in the quiz is from Clive Barker's Nightbreed (1990).
