Today the first of our homegrown brave boys, or boyos, go into battle. The waiting is over (for the men on here, not me). The magically voiced powerhouses from the land of the red dragon take to the soccar field! I'm sure we all wish them well and urge them to believe! One Archie Gemmel moment of magic is all Wales need to achieve a great victory! Come On Wales! Edited to make post sound more stirring. Mr. Robert Page would be well-advised to pin these words to the dressing room door so Messers Bale and Gemmill know what is expected of them. When saying Archie Gemmel, I was using the name of Britain's Second Greatest Ever player as an example to stir the Welsh valley blood. Of course I know he isn't playing today for Wales. This is a classic example of a male chauvinist assuming a woman knows nothing about football. I had to use Britain's Second Greatest player, as I couldn't think of a Welsh one. However had this been Rugger I would have said the wonder that was Barry John or the equally great Gareth Edwards. But it isn't. So I didn't.

Really enjoyed last night's game - from the blistering rendition of Nessun Dorma by Andrea Bocelli which reduced the wife to a crying wreck. I may have had grit in my eye. Was well impressed with Italy, but I called a Turkey win before it kicked off - genuinely thought Turkey would sneak a lucky goal in - shows you how much I know about football. Going to watch Belgium Russia tonight as I've always loved Belgium and I still hold out hope that one day they'll win the World Cup.

So Wales didn't lose! Which is something. To celebrate I have changed my profile picture to myself and Effie dancing on the beach. I watched the second half and even though it was rubbish and there was no Archie Gemmel stuff and Switzerland were offside with a goal, whatever that is, we should still be happy! The question is can Scotland and England equal these heroics? Only time will tell.
Edited to say I see that Effie is showing off and not dancing in that photograph. She is terrible isn't she?

Turkey probably happy with the result of the Wales vs Switzerland game, and Wales sighing with relief that they got the draw after Switzerland piled on the pressure late on.
Princess, I am keeping my fingers crossed for England doing well, but I suspect that football won't be coming home--55 years of hurt and all that...

Watching Denmark Finland. There are no words. Poor Christian Eriksen. Terrifying.

Have there been any really unusual winners of big tournaments? Maybe the strange lockdown build up to this one might help spring a surprise. Team's surely can't prepare in the same way as previously.

"The Danish FA says Christian Eriksen is awake and waiting more tests in hospital."
I doubt anyone watching the game thought they'd read such positive news. Hope he makes a full recovery.

They are going to continue the match. How can players be in a fit state even if they have heard he is ok.
Apparently the players want to play.

I missed the first part of the match so hadn't heard of Ericsen's collapse. Hope he'll be okay and make a full recovery. Second half has just started, but the Danish players heads must be all over the place.

The day after ...
That was horrible. Thank goodness the reports on Christian Eriksen's condition seem positive. Stating the obvious, but I'm sure those who were watching will agree that the response from the players of both sides, the officials, the medical teams and the two sets of fans was absolutely superb.
Perhaps less so. When it was announced the game would go ahead, we were informed this was at the wish of both sets of players and, indeed, Eriksen himself. What we weren't informed was that the players had been given the stark choice between completing the game yesterday or doing so this afternoon (after they'd likely have spent the night worrying about their friend/ colleague/ opponent's condition). No wonder they chose to get it out of the way.
Switzerland 1 Wales 1. No swanky James Bond car treatment for the match ball in Baku. Flat atmosphere. Struggled to get into this one. Almost a replay of last night's game, with the Swiss playing gutsy but limited Welsh dragons off the pitch for almost entire 90 minutes. Difference being, profligate as they were, Italy put away 3 of the approx. 120 chances they created. The Swiss managed just the one, and paid for it when the bandage-headed, bloodied Mr. Moore powered home an unstoppable header.
Denmark 0 Finland 1. Was shaping up lively, noisy crowd, compact stadium.
Belgium 3 Russia 0. The effortlessly terrifying Roy Keane suggested we should save time and give Belgium a holiday until the semi's where they might come up against a team capable of giving them a match. Russia, playing before their own partisan fans, were incapable of doing so.
Sunday June 13
Group C: Austria V N. Macedonia Group C: Holland V Ukraine Group D: England V Croatia

So good to hear that Christian is on his road to recovery. We witnessed a miracle happen on that pitch last night and it came in the form of the blistering reactions of the ref, teammates and medical team who got him out there alive.
Belgium Russia - felt strange to be watching the game after the previous match, but a great start to Belgium's campaign. They quite gently dismantled Russia. England Croatia - that was a lot of fun. Mings utterly marvellous in defence. Harry Kane's last big payday slipping through his fingers if that poor show was anything to go by.
Have now watched more football in 3 days than I have in 5 years - it's just lovely to see the crowds back and it's hard not to get caught up in it all.

Agree 100% on Christian Eriksen. We shall have to see if we ever see him on a football pitch again, but imo that matters not a jot when health is concerned. I hope his health will allow a return, but if not then I am sure he still has so much to offer to football in other roles should he choose to do that. The only thing that matters is that he is thankfully still with us. I thought England played okay against tricky opponents. It's a tradition that the team tend to start slowly in finals, so hopefully they will gain confidence from that win and improve in later games. Today was actually the first time they have won an opening group game in the Euros.
