Jack Ketchum ... Edward Lee ... Graham Masterton ... Lucy Taylor ... Bruce Jones ... J. N. Williamson ...P. D. Cacek ... Alan Brennert These and other masters of the erotic subconscious are about to hijack your dreams.
FEAR drives your body into a cold sweat and fills your soul with a strange heat. Resistance is futile. Not because you can't fight the fever — because you won't want to.
THE journey will ensure that you burn with a message from the rain forest carrying tidings of love and destruction ... hunger at a banquet whose main course is forbidden flesh ... tremble before the sign of the rose that consumes all who worship its beauty...quake with an obsession that turns desire into deadly reckoning... and surrender to the hot call of the blood. Don't bother praying for at cure — after all, it's just a FEVERAnother day, another perve out. Jeff Gelb - The Portrait: Kent State Uni, May 1970. Art student Jay Amarillo has made a bet with roomie Dan Coleman that he'll lose his virginity by June. Now he's discovered the joys of dropping acid, it doesn't look like he'll win ... until Nan, "the ultimate flower child poster girl," agrees to pose for him. It's a con Dan - far the most talented painter of the two - has gamely agreed to. He paints the girl's portrait, Jay claims the credit and, surely, this time he gets to bed the subject. Tonight's the big night of the big unveiling. What can possibly go horribly wrong? Another candidate for Bloody Hippies Tom Piccirilli - Call It: Cord takes unkindly to Diane's husband arriving home unexpectedly while they're in the middle of phone sex. Worse, Diane leaves the damn thing off the hook as she and Bennet get it on. Blood-splattered ending doesn't quite come off. Michael Garrett - Daddy's Dirty Books: A latchkey kid invites a school pal around to ogle his father's secret porno stash. Pa keeps them in his underwear drawer along with a set of handcuffs and several disturbing Polaroids. The kid misses his Mum. It seems the police don't buy Dad's "she ran off" explanation as they're forever snooping around while he's at work, but then many women have gone missing around here of late ... James Crawford - Untamed Sex: Are you tired of safe sex? Do you want to experience sex as nature intended it? Do you want to experience animal passion? Then call 1-800-UNTAMED, right now! Some years into their marriage, Bill and Sheila still love one another dearly but they no longer enjoy the intimacies of youth. Maybe the UNTAMED virtual reality experience will spice things up? For a bargain introductory offer $99, customers get to experience 15 minutes in the abandoned sex life of the wild animal of their choice. Bill is skeptical - "That's what this mystery is all about - animal porn? That's sick! If I wanted to hump a sheep I'd spend a summer on a farm. Come on Sheila, we're getting out of here." - but by this point his wife is desperate to try anything. The modest fee proves money well spent. On returning home, the lust-crazed couple bang one another's brains out like never before. Problems arise when Sheila demands they return to the Center for a lengthier, far costlier session. Again and again.

Lois Gresh - Sole Man: Charles 'Chuck' Malley, a swimming pool attendant at the health spa, is a closet foot fetishist. Until now, only wife Monica was aware of Chuck's little kink, which she delights in refusing to accommodate. Tanya, a sexy young colleague at the spa, is quite the opposite. Somehow she too has divined Chuck's fancy and is eager to indulge his every whim! We only hope Monica won't barge in on their session in the steam room, otherwise things could turn nasty.
Nat Gertler - Restin' Piece: Myron Gillis was midway through humping ol' Maddy Conroy when his heart picked the most inopportune moment to peg out. No sooner has he been laid in the soil than Myron crawls from his grave, unable to rest until rid of the urge. Our narrator, his best pal, fixes him up with a Magnolia Street hooker, only for the curse of coitus interruptus to strike again. Mistaking Liz's orgasmic moans for the desperate screams of a murder victim, two cops burst through the door and blast Myron's head clean off his shoulders.
The poor bastard is worse off than ever. Gals like Liz can't afford to be too choosy where punters are concerned, but even she has her limits. Can his pal find a whore desperate enough to ride a decapitated rotting corpse?

Lucy Taylor - The Five Percent People: Meet handsome forty-something, Dr. Caleb Masterton, Gods gift to the opposite sex. "Psychology is only Caleb's second career. His first is making women fall in love with him. Because he knows what women want, he lives up to every fantasy when the affair begins ...." Although, once he has them hooked, it is a different story.
Masterton, who makes no pretense at fidelity, has an uncanny ability to persuade bed-mate of the moment that she is the only woman he has ever loved. As she has 95% of him, can she really begrudge the sisterhood sharing a paltry 5% between them? Alicia, who believes herself Mrs. Masterton in all but name, is not best pleased when an obsessed patient, Gwen Boston, stalks Caleb during a London conference, and then there's Giselle in Albany, keeps sending him nudie photos and flirtatious come-on's. A combination of Gwen's repeat "suicide attempts" and Alicia's incompetence at tying bondage knots bring the love quadrangle-plus crashing to an abrupt end.
Jack Ketchum & Edward Lee - Love Letters from the Rain Forest: Eyebrows are raised when Professor Howard Moley, botanist, "academic scarecrow," sexless personality vacuum somehow pulls Clara Holmes, the hottest woman on campus. Clara is, of course, only interested in his immense wealth, but eventually concludes that even that is small compensation for spending any time in his soul-wilting company.
Moley sets off on expedition in Brazil, convinced that, despite recent cross words between them, Clara loves him dearly as he does her. There's doubtless a perfectly logical reason why he's yet to receive a reply to his letters .... And he's right. Even were she inclined to write, Clara is too busy working her way through every stud on campus to find time.
Meanwhile, the Professor has discovered a fungi which, uniquely, grows on live mammals. In fact, once inhaled, the spores of Vermilius Moleyus replicate in the bloodstream. Perhaps he should handle his specimen more carefully ...

Stephen Woodworth - Purple Hearts and Other Wounds: The night Billy Barnes finally cheated on sweetheart back home and surrendered his virginity to Tian, a gorgeous Vietnamese hooker, was his last as a "real man." No sooner had Billy opened his innings, than a gook sniper blew away his dick. He's flown home to California, where a tearful Marlene informs him it's over, she has her heart set on having kids. Weird thing is, Billy is now prone to phantom limb activity, his ghost erection squirting semen in his pants at inopportune moments. For some unaccountable reason he knows for sure Tian is responsible and returns to Long Binh to find her.
Bruce Jones - Feeding the Beast: Trishia the hooker provides a steady supply of victims for Franklyn, her lycanthrope lover. In wolf form, Franklyn is endowed with the monster phallus of her fantasies, while his insatiable appetite for human flesh rids her of a loathsome pimp and several young women who remind Trish of either her detested mother or sister. Franklyn eventually bestows the dark gift out of compassion- with disastrous results.

Have had a great deal of enjoyment from the Hot Blood series, but this feels like a volume too far.
J. N. Williamson - Two Hands Are Better Than One: Tom Russell, a journalist on Greedy men's magazine, is granted an interview with the notoriously reclusive Morley Pritchard, reputed to possess "the world's finest pictorial female erotica." How did this world champion of self-pleasure come by his magnificent gallery of exclusive photographs?
John F. D. Taff - Orifice: Not sure I understand this one at all. The way to a woman's heart is through an orifice that squelches open on the flower tattoo between her breasts? So how do I get into her mind, wonders jealous lover?
Wendy Rathbone - The Sinister Woods: Twelve-year-old Jack loves Daniel, but he daren't risk Father finding out what they did in the wood on Mr. Farmer's land. But Father already knows: he spied on them. "I will not have a pansy in this house. They should all be killed." There must be something Jack can do to make father not hate him.
Three to go.

Patricia D. Cacek - Metalica: Kate Dylan has an insatiable lust for Pelvic examinations. "I don't know whether to applaud your energy or your stamina. If the printout is accurate, you're seeing twelve gynecologists on a monthly basis, and you've had non-repeat visits with fifty-three others." It's a question of taking one's orgasms where you find them.
Elsa Rutherford - Flesh and Blood: New Orleans. For centuries the Terrebourne family have loyally served the wealthy Courdenville's through a series of tragedies. Catastrophe strikes again when Caroline, daughter of Judge John Courdenville, gives birth to a son, Gabriel, by her secret lover. The Judge and Rusty's father are lifelong friends, but racial prejudice runs deep. Desiree's Baby with added murder, incest, futility ...
Graham Masterton - The Secret Shih Tan: Hugo Xawery, multi-millionaire, offers a proposition to Craig Richard, master chef at LA's Burn-the-Tail restaurant. Xawery will let Craig study his copy of the infamous The Secret Shih Tan - one of only two copies known to survive - on condition that having read it, "you must choose one recipe and cook it for me." This being a ghoulish Graham story, the slim volume in question is a cannibal cookbook for those whose tastes run to dining on human sexual organs. Craig, who has already been swept off his feet by the proposed main course, makes his choice.
Graham Masterton delivers as he tends to do - he really is good at this kind of thing - and Love Letters from the Rain Forest is proper ghastly. It's unlikely many of the others will live long in the memory.

It's unlikely many of the others will live long in the memory. I am of the firm opinion that Masterton too often doesn't reach the finish-line with his novels; the conclusion is often not well rounded, to put it nicely. But his short stories are indeed a class of its own. They really grab you. And the astonishable lack of restraint is a bonus.

The dedication in what proved to be the final volume in the series, Dark Passions: Hot Blood XIII, (Pinnacle, 2007) reads: May as well post the full details here. Not sure when I'll get around to reading the thing as I'm all erotic-ed out just now, and besides, welcome re-enforcements - in the form of Paperback Fanatic 44 and 3rd BHF Book of Horror - have arrived.
