I am delighted that this years calander is dedicated to Charles; such a decent human being and sadly missed. Day Twelve: Chrissie Demant The contemporary fiction. Only one place to start, and that's with Baron Mortbury, Charles Black, punk musician, award winning publisher, and editor of the exceptional Black Books of Horror (an earlier publication was a Prisoner of Cell Block H fanzine which led to his being introduced to star cast regulars on one of their early 'nineties promo tours of the UK). Had he lived, Charlie's next project was to have been a one-off Sword & Sorcery anthology. Way back in August 2005, 'Dr. Terror' was the first person to register with Vault and remained a loyal friend and supporter of this forum - and, especially, its calendar. This one is for him.

An excellent start to the contemporary section with this twisty, and what an illustration. I'm sure Mr. Black would have been pleased.

"Continuity by John Peel and Mike Raven"--that must have been quite an experience! I think it should have been called "discontinuity" in the case of Mr R (who later found religion and became an eccentric "modern" sculptor living out in the country--one of his children has a webpage and it's more bizarre than some of the material to be found in Pan Horror volume 69). Fabulous drawing by Chrissie! Makes me think of these lines by the late Gwydion Pendderwen (from a song I enjoy singing as the Winter Solstice draws near): Nine white maidens defend HerWhere She treads without leaving spoorAs she seeks her defender Who shall wear the crown once more. By the light of the beacon You can see Her pass through the ring She'll not weary nor weaken Till she finds Her wintertide king. Now the leprous white Lady Leads Her train of the lost Leads the spirits through glade and wood And goodly fields of frost.www.youtube.com/watch?v=iUTk61K4HFkcheers, H.

Fun stuff from Charles. It is a small but meaningful comfort to think that his words are living on. I just re-read Justin Marriott's interview with Charlie in Pulp Horror #3, July 2016. These lines are so him. " .... If I did have my time again, I probably wouldn't do any interviews or go to any conventions, maybe even leave my name off the books, having them come out uncredited, and just remain something of a mystery.
It's never really been about me, and whilst many people seem to crave fame and celebrity, there's a part of me that thinks it would be kind of good to go through life totally anonymously, leaving not a trace of my existence, so if I lived my life again maybe I wouldn't even do the books!"

I am so sorry for your loss.
My personal view is that bereavement never really ends--one simply gets used to it. And then from time to time something cool shows up and one thinks, "I really must tell ---- about that..." and then remember that they're no longer in the realm of the living. It really doesn't get any better but one becomes accustomed to that familiar ache.

Friday 13th brings .... David. A. Riley .... a noxious tale of lust and voodoo by veteran horror author, regular Black Books contributor, and Parallel Universe co-supremo, David A. Riley. To best of mine - and the isfdb's - knowledge, the delightfully titled The Corpse-Maker has not been reprinted since its original publication in issue #2 of David A. Sutton's Weird Window 'zine for March 1971. Many thanks to Mr. Riley for permission to put that right.

For some reason I have been reminded of this: She offered her honour. He honoured her offer. And all night long, it was honour and offer.

I only managed to read Charles Black's story just now. What a fine start to this year's contemporaries, and a great illustration to accompany it.

It's always a pleasure to find one of David Riley's tales in the calendar, and this one was well up to his usual high standard, so many thanks to him.
