.... and it isn't this one.
Day Ten
Particularly revolting Pan Horrors have taken a caning this year, so will make this the last, quite a fitting selection too, as - unless Alan Temperley had a hand in them - they seldom came more revolting than the works of Norman Kaufman, master of unpleasantness. Depending on your POV, Lady on Display is either a pointless exercise in sadism, a brilliant horror story, nothing much to write home about, or all three of these.
Mr. Kaufman doesn't seem to have been the luckiest of authors as he was also a sometime contributor to Norman Kark's London Mystery Magazine, so could be he never saw a penny for his work. He may not even know any of it was published.

] Particularly revolting Pan Horrors have taken a caning this year Where, when, how? Why? I don't get it. Amusing story. Not exactly well-written in terms of craft, it could have used another draft. After the obsession with dental works at the beginning I seriously thought that it would go into this direction. Still it was fun. Thanks.
And those photos are great work. The clown is still haunting me.

] Particularly revolting Pan Horrors have taken a caning this year Where, when, how? Why? Sorry, please excuse my slang. Translation. "I have included what may appear an inordinate number of Pan Horror stories on this year's VAC ..." A few more raves from the grave and then it will be the turn of the contemporary authors. We're still two or three stories short ....

I enjoyed reading "The Graveyard" and "I'll Kiss You Goodnight," and rereading "Black Thing at Midnight," but the illustrations by Chrissie and the photos by Dr. Proof are definitely the highlights so far for me. Another of Dr. Proof's glorious photos. Shrinkproof "I was enjoying a cold beer in the summer sunshine at a pavement bar in Gouda in the Netherlands in 2016, looked up and this was looking back from an upper storey window." I thought of a story to accompany this one, but couldn't find enough spare hours to type it. Clue: Van Thal revived it for an early volume of the Pan Horrors .... Oh shit, Mannequin alert!

I have been missing in action for a year now to my regret. Just too busy to do anything it seems. I have to add I am delighted that this years calander is dedicated to Charles; such a decent human being and sadly missed. I'll attempt to catch up with the stories over Christmas. Already looking at the superb illustrations has brought up the old nostalgia for nasty things.

Day fiveDoubtless most of our reader will be familiar with today's cult sado-horror story, but in the circumstances it kind of had to be included. Yet another mystery author in that, for all the wild guesswork, it doesn't appear as though anybody has yet unmasked the version of 'Alex White' wrote The Clinic? Those interested might like to compare and contrast with Charles Birkin's Marjorie's on Starlight as featured on our 2014 calendar. Then again, they might not! Thanks to Johnny Mains for providing the text file. "She was very happy." Trigger warning from Alex White, deary dear.

A delightful story, I always enjoy Norm's stuff, even though I (& probably many fellow Vaulters) could see the end coming. POSSIBLE SPOILER ALERT - But I wonder how he was going to give her a new face....

He decided to rename the tavern to "Faceless Lass".

Day ElevenShrinkproof "Found in a church in Amsterdam, May 2015." Many thanks to friend Humgoo for taking the time and effort to type today's downright unnerving supernatural shocker - as the man said, you can't have a Calendar without something from the Creeps! Such a shame Patrick Carleton didn't write more for the series as, on the evidence of Dr. Horder's Room, the man had a flair for the erotic macabre. Respectfully dedicated to Hugh Lamb, a friend of and/ or inspiration to several on this board. On a personal note, it was Hugh A Wave of Fear gave me my first taste of Charles Birkin, and ultimately turned me on to the Creeps.

I'm a day behind, so just read Lady on Display. This is my first time reading it, and the ending was, indeed, telegraphed. As well as the face replacement, I wonder how he was planning to keep her brain alive? If mine host isn't on Dem's list of worst pub landlords, then he surely should be. Nasty little tale, but I bet Norman had a smile on his face when he was writing it.

Superb is the only adjective to describe today's story; thanks to Dem for choosing it & from me also to Humgoo for typing it!

Hey there! Long time lurker, but this is my first post and I decided to contribute to the 2019 calender. I translated a story from Eddy C. Bertin from Dutch into English. It's called Gris-Gris and Bertin wrote in in the late 1990's for a juvenile book of horror stories. I just send an e-mail containing the story. I hope it gets posted.
Cheers!
