I was thrilled to come across a reference to this collection on the internet, particularly because it reprints Olive Harper's The Sociable Ghost, a remarkable satirical novel by a remarkable woman. You should be commended for bringing it back into print. I had read it before, but I was curious as to what you and Ms. Edmundson had to say about it, so I just purchased a copy from Black Shuck. I'm looking forward to reading the other stories in the collection.
If I may be so bold as to sneak in another plug, you and other's who enjoyed Sociable Ghost might like Harper's A Fair Californian. It's an early (1889) and highly-imaginative lost-race fantasy with some curious feminist elements. It also shares several themes with The Sociable Ghost. I edited a new edition for Ramble House (2018) after picking up a copy of the original edition off the free shelf at my local library without a clue as to its content.

Heya David, I couldn't believe it when I came across the book - picked it up in a 2nd hand bookshop for £5. It certainly puzzles me as to why this isn't known of more - there's not been anything from that era so profound - a journey into the realms of death. I annotated the text.
Will look out for Harper's other book.

Hi Johnny, Good to hear from you. I saw that you annotated Sociable Ghost. I'm in the middle of re-reading Sarban's Ringstones, and I'm looking forward to diving into your collection as soon as I finish that. A Fair Californian has a lot of things in common with Sociable Ghost, and I'm prety sure you would like it. You can find the book on Amazon. A handful of Harper's other books are available electronically, but much of her work is now, sadly, impossible to find. In any case, based on what I have been able to read, Californian and Ghost are her best books. I don't know if you know anything about Harper (actually the pen name of Ellen Burrell D'Apery) herself, but I think her life is even more fascinating than her fiction. I discuss it in the intro to A Fair Californian. The look inside feature on Amazon allows you to read a significant portion of the intro. So what do you think the odds are that two editors working independently would re-release two long-forgotten novels by the same long-forgotten author within a couple of months of each other in the same year?

Oh thanks for that - some really interesting stuff about her in there.
Yeah - who would have guessed! Must have been something in the air. Serendipity! I'm hoping to bring out a stand-alone verion of the book in the future. Be good to have it as its own thing.
