Hello everyone! I was referred to this board by a poster on Folk Horror Revival as a repository of suitable knowledge. Nice to meet you.
So, there's this book that I read as a kid, once, that disturbed me greatly. I cannot remember the title, nor can I recall the author.
A collection of ghost stories, for kids, Mid 80s, no later than early 1987. Cover image was of a boy's hand, branded with a Gothic M for Malefactor in what may have been a background that looked like a dungeon.
Among the stories in the book were: one where a ghost branded a bad boy's hand; one where a little girl gets a part on an advert and the camera steals her soul; and an absolutely harrowing non-supernatural story about a little girl who develops a crush on an older girl and is cruelly rebuffed at the end.
Hardly anything has ever distressed me more than that book. I have not seen it for thirty years. I would like to know what it was called, and who wrote it (I think it was by a single author), but I do not remember the title or writer.
Does anyone have a clue?
All help is gratefully received.
