As mentioned elsewhere, at least 102 of the 170 storied featured in the Not At Night books first/ also [delete as applicable] appeared in Weird Tales where many as not were illustrated by some of the day's most brilliant and, possibly, not-so-brilliant artists. These are superb. I'm having fun imagining the stories, especially "'You understand now,' purred the Mandarin." Yikes!
Really beautiful work. Once again, I'm learning about fabulous art thanks to that infamous lair of horror and hideousness, that abominable den of all that is vile and venomous, that veritable shrine to decadence and depravity... THE VAULT... OF.... EEEEEVIL!!!!
cackling,

H. P. Lovecraft - The Horror At Red Hook ( You'll Need a Nightlight, 1927) Jon Arfstrom ( Weird Tales, March 1952) On it's original Weird Tales publication (Jan. 1927), The Horror At Red Hook was graced with an illustration by none other than the legendary G. O. Olinick. Have yet to see the results of this juicy collaboration, so if anyone can provide/ direct me to a scan would be very grateful. GOO's had previously provided the artwork for HPL's He ( Weird Tales, Sept. 1926) which likewise remains a mystery to me. Harold Ward - The House of the Living Dead ( Grim Death, 1932) Joseph Doolin ( Weird Tales, March 1932) Hazel Heald - The Horror In The Museum ( Terror By Night, 1934) Jayem Wilcox ( Weird Tales, July 1933)

"He dropped her with great accuracy into a cesspool" wins my vote for Vault of Evil line of the week.
We're basically living in a giant cesspool with the pols and the media here in the US now so the imagery speaks to me.
cheers, H

Hazel Heald - The Horror In The Museum ( Terror By Night, 1934) Jayem Wilcox ( Weird Tales, July 1933) I love this story, re-read it often. It is one of the first Mythos stories I ever read and it left a lasting impression. From today's viewpoint, after reading all of Lovecraft and I guess hundreds of new stories, I have to say that it is not a very good story. It strikes me as a blueprint for those typical bad (and good) pastiches. It is quite ironic that HPL himself did a re-write on this, as if he wanted to satirize his own work.
But for all its faults, I still love it.

It strikes me as a blueprint for those typical bad (and good) pastiches. It is quite ironic that HPL himself did a re-write on this, as if he wanted to satirize his own work. But for all its faults, I still love it. Same thing here! Back in the 'eighties, there was this brilliant junk-shop/ off licence on the Isle of Dogs, and once I'd figured out the proprietor was charging less for his second hand paperbacks than the price of a daily newspaper ... that's where the bookaholism started. First twin purchase, Elsie Lee's novelisation of The Masque Of The Red Death and 1st Pan Book Of Horror Stories (severed head edition), the latter likely to blame for subsequent Not At Night fetish. Had read a fair few horror & supernatural tales before, but only as library loans - the idea of hoarding them was the preserve of insane people. The Horror In The Museum made a huge impression. Shortly afterwards, landed a copy of Hamlyn's Best Ghost Stories, a slightly misleading title, that one, which includes Pickman's Model, The Dunwich Horror, The Rats In The Walls and The Music Of Erich Zann. It was difficult not to want to read more HPL after that. Signe Toksvig - The Devil's Martyr ( By Daylight Only, 1929) C. C. Senf ( Weird Tales,June 1928) H. Warner Munn - The Chain ( By Daylight Only, 1929) Hugh Rankin ( Weird Tales, Apr. 1928) R. Anthony - The Parasitic Hand ( You'll Need A Nightlight, 1927) G. O. Olinick ( Weird Tales, Nov. 1926) Robert E. Howard - Worms Of The Earth ( Keep On The Light, 1933) Jayem Wilcox ( Weird Tales, Nov. 1932) Well after the event, but still a beauty. H. P. Lovecraft - Pickman's Model ( Grim Death, 1932) Hannes Bok ( Famous Fantastic Mysteries, Dec. 1951)

Just these three, all well post- Not At Night, and that's as far as I've got with it for time being. Bassett Morgan - Tiger Dust ( Keep on the Light, 1933) Pete Kuhlhoff ( Weird Tales, Jan. 1954). Tiger Dust originally appeared in Weird Tales, April 1933. Robert E. Howard - Worms Of The Earth ( Keep on the Light, 1933) Virgil Finlay ( Famous Fantastic Mysteries, June 1953). Guy Preston - The Inn ( Grim Death, 1932) Chrissie Demant (Vault Of Evil, 2008). "The inn sign ... was in the nature of a coffin supported by six headless bearers goose-stepping towards a white headstone, and underneath this somewhat forbidding daub with grim irony, the legend 'Ye Journey's End' "
