Germany's class telled in their game against NI, but the Ulstermen proved themselves determined opponents. Listening to the commentary, their fate now rests with the results of other games, but it sounded pretty hopeful that NI would progress to the next round, so crossed fingers for that.

According to the headlines, NI are through to the next round. Congratulations and well done to them, they have done themselves and the UK proud.

They've qualified, Rip, as Turkey needed a 4 nil win to displace them in great scheme of things best 3rd place teams. Well done Michael O'Neill & squad on super achievement! Only Caught the Croatia-Spain game but it was an absolute fizzer! Spain, wearing dayglo abortion shirts straight out of the Psychedelic Furs wardrobe circa groovy Forever Now album, eased ahead on 7 minutes with a Morata tap in after typical defence-bamboozling exchange of passes, and looked like they'd stroll it. But the mighty Croats, who'd rested five of their starting XI, came storming back! A deft chip by Ivan Rakitic hit crossbar, defender and post before rebounding to safety, but Nikola Kalinic had better luck on stroke of half time, directing a tidy cross past an atypically erratic David De Gea. Croatia better side after interval but should have fallen behind when Spain were gifted a highly contentious pen after David Silva was felled by a passing dandelion or something. Up stepped Sergio Ramos to nonchalantly blast home ... only for goalie Subasic to come charging off his line like an angry pink rhinoceros to turn his thunderbolt around post. Three minutes to go and a great night for the chequered demons got even better when Perisic beat De Gea at his near post which, as Glenn Hoddle will tell you, is not allowed at this level. The splendid Slaven Bilic ecstatic in ITV studio! 'Wrighty' seems to have found a new best pal there. Croatia top group, swerve Italy to face one of the best third placers in last 16. Today's extremely attractive fixtures Eng get to find out their next opponents. All rests on whoever finishes runners up in Group F. Group F 17.00 Hungary V Portugal Group F 17.00 Austria V Iceland
Group E 20.00 Ireland V Italy Group F 20.00 Belgium V SwedenMake the most of it, because after tonight we go cold turkey until Saturday!

Well done to Northern Ireland, and a cracking result from Croatia. England/Iceland would be historic.

England/Iceland would be historic. Nostradamus! Hungary 3 Portugal 3 Austria 1 Iceland 2 Italy 0 Ireland 1 Sweden 0 Belgium 1Surely the most exciting day of the tournament to date. Man, we will need the two-day hiatus to take it all in. Thrills and spills! Last minute winners! Goal fest in Lyon! CR7 recovers his mojo. Mass outbreak of crab dancing in Stade de France and Reykjavík. Irish ecstasy! Roy Keane's beautiful happy face revealed to world. Big Zlat's Swedish swansong falls flat. I can't go on! UEFA European Championship - Round of 16 Saturday 25th 14:00 Switzerland V Poland 17:00 Wales V Northern Ireland 20:00 Croatia V Portugal Sunday 26th
14:00 France V R. of Ireland 17:00 Germany V Slovakia 20:00 Hungary V Belgium Monday 27th

Both Wales and NI must fancy that they can progress a step further and it should be an absorbing match. I am glad we don't have to face Portugal but Iceland will be no pushovers. Having said that, if England have truly progressed since the 2014 World Cup fiasco they really should beat Iceland. If they don't then it could well be bye bye Roy. BTW heard on the radio that 8% of the population of Iceland had traveled to France to follow their team.

Well done to all the teams from our little islands. What's this new tactic of scoring a goal? I must speak to Strachan. I fancy Bale will be the difference against NI but who knows.
I wouldn't like to be playing Iceland; this breakaway stuff could be a real problem for England as they are flattering to deceive up front. There is a prospect of a NI V Eire final on the cards although I wouldn't put any money on it.

England/Iceland would be historic. Nostradamus! And the world will end in the year 2000. If England are going out before the final, I wouldn't mind going out to Iceland. Unbelievable for these septic Isles as Craig says. Well, at least of 'em will go through. What a crazy tournament!

Oh no! The plucky Swiss out on penalties, the plucky N Irish out to that cruellest of blows, and the Ronaldo bore machine squeak through on jam.

Hungary 0 Belgium 4 - difficult to imagine a team looking so good and getting absolutely zilch from a game.
French got lucky too. Referees have been very good but not noticing that a ball has bounced off someone's head right in front of you smacks of silliness.
Good luck to England tonight. You'll need to try reducing the syllables in your songs to have a decent chance against those Vikings.

Iceland 2 - Poundland 1
I gave up watching international football years back because England were so consistently embarrassing. That and the endless, ludicrous hype about how well they're going to do because "this time it's different". But, flicking through the channels this evening I caught the start of the match, and started watching for no particular reason; I hadn't seen England play for AGES. And I was hooked, I couldn't stop watching. They were just so hypnotically AWFUL, like watching a bunch of people who use jumpers for goal posts.
The better team won. How much do they pay our "world class" players?

What a week. Well played, Iceland. Hope you can give France something to think about. Good night, everybody. My younger son, who is the family's resident football (soccer) fan, is travelling through Europe and watched the game in a pub in Dublin. He enjoyed it a lot, though, particularly as his next port of call is Iceland! Mark

What a week. Well played, Iceland. Hope you can give France something to think about. Good night, everybody. This is what you get when you're nice to the elves. And I'm not being entirely frivolous! What happens though if the two teams I've been rooting for in equal measure - Iceland and Wales - meet in the final?

I have been a supporter of the England football team since World Cup 1970 and even now can remember my tears at our 3-2 defeat at the hands of West Germany in that competition. I have witnessed some poor performances down the years but nothing to compare to last night's shambles. By the end I had given up and was just numb that the team could have sunk that low. Abject, clueless, pitiful, useless, overpaid, overhyped bunch of prancing no-hopers. It was a total fiasco. Hodgson should have gone after the World Cup 2014 debacle and I thought that was the nadir, but last night was so much worse. These were our best players? Then heaven help us. Goodness knows where we go from here. Some are touting Gareth Southgate, Alan Pardue and the like...oh dear. I blame players and manager. Players are responsible for their performances and the manager for results. Once again we have flattered to deceive and failed where it really mattered. Germany, on the other hand are where they usually are at competitions, despite modest friendly/qualifications results. The truth of the matter is that there is simply not the pool of talent to choose from anymore due to the sheer number of foreign players in the premier league. We were told that bringing foreign players in would help our players improve skills but it hasn't happened. 30 years ago premier league teams were made up of mainly British players. Now count how many make up the likes of Chelsea, Man City, Arsenal etc. Whoever accepts the job of manager has a heck of a job on his hands. I say again, this was worse than Brazil 2014. Congrats to Iceland...they were the best team by a country mile and good luck against France. Also good luck to Wales.
