Well, it's all in the title - although Thongor isn't fighting them all as he has a few pirate buddies who team up to save his city. (The pirates have acquired a wizard friend with a death ray and have en masse decided to destroy it - mostly it seems just for fun)
There are a cast of jolly pals too who assist in a hearty way. Sometimes they speak in a virtually unintelligible pirate language which just about includes 'avast and belay'.
The book takes approximately three minutes to read. It has few merits and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Is it sad for me to admit that I have a whole bookshelf devoted to Lin Carter? Pirates is probably my favorite Thongor book along with Thongor and the Dragon City. I love a lot of those covers on the Berkley editions.

I read a Thongor book once (in 1973)! Unfortunately, I do not remember which one. I seem to recall, however, that it had rubber-band-powered aircraft in it.

I've only read a couple of Thongor short stories, but still have a few issues of his short-lived 1970s Marvel Comics series, in "Creatures on the Loose". They were quite good fun. Until recently, I'd never heard that there was a proposal for a "Thongor" movie a few years prior to the first "Conan" film: singular--points.blogspot.com.au/2014/09/the-barbarian-movie-that-wasnt.htmlI imagine that any resulting movie would probably have been pretty ordinary, but the press book cover at the above link looks nice.

If they gave it the Flash Gordon treatment a Thongor movie might be quite good. Think it would have to be a kind of kids film

Perusal of cover images has allowed me to determine that the one I read was THONGOR IN THE CITY OF MAGICIANS.

The only Thongor tales I've read are the ones included in the volumes of The Year's Best Fantasy Stories that he edited. I can't say they inspired me to read more, but I've always preferred Carter the editor (not including Carter the self-editor) to Carter the writer.
On a related planetary romance topic, I just purchased Jack Vance's Planet of Adventure series. A wise investment?

Think my heart felt thanks to Carter as editor lurks on the vault somewhere. I absolutely love Vance. I've reread most of his books about ten times - in a few paragraphs he sprays a million ideas around in succinct and beautiful prose. A remarkable genius.

I just finished City of the Chasch; it was a great start to the series. Now it's onto the second book. Perhaps it's juvenile of me, but I can't help snickering whenever I look at the title: Servants of the Wankh.
