Relic is an entertaining novel, much better than the movie. I always entertained the idea to read more of the Pendergast novels, but I gathered that they went fast to the serial killer theme coupled with complicated family plots which I am not very interested in.
But Relic at least paints a fascinating picture of the behind the scenes work of the museum. For anybody interested in such things it is a wonderful story, while the sf or weird mystery scenes are low key enough to not make everything too far out. And it manages to take full advantage of its setting.

This is not quite correct. I just read the latest one, BLOODLESS, which involves the famous unsolved mystery of "D B Cooper," time travel, and monsters from other dimensions. I am not saying the Pendergast novels are good, necessarily, but I can think of only one that features a serial killer. The best Pendergast novel is BRIMSTONE, and might be a good place for you to pick up the series again, should you nevertheless decide to do so.

"D. B. Cooper"? Really? I don't get the fascination with this case. I have seen quite a few crime shows which used the story and I never thought this mystery terribly interesting.

[/div][/quote] I suppose it's because he was never caught or identified. Like Jack the Ripper people like the mystery. Also it's a strange crime and so unlikely, it's a daredevil thing to do, or crazy if you want to be more honest. Jack the Ripper has some mad theories as to who did it, such as royals; Walter Sickert the painter, because he painted women naked on beds with men nearby, and was interested in the killings; and a noble man like Doctor Barnardo, because he talked to prostitutes in the area where the killings occurred. Some woman even said it was her ancestor, as if you'd want to be proud of that, because he had a milk round there, and moved house around the times the killings stopped.

Relicis an entertaining novel, much better than the movie. I agree, although I still enjoyed the movie. Even if it made a lot of pointless changes (a lot of character omissions and name changes, including what the monster is called). I love Tom Sizemore as D'Agosta. He makes a great monster-hunting detective. And the scene of the SWAT team getting slaughtered is the stuff of nightmares and one of the few improvements over the book (where their deaths aren't explicitly described), even if the one guy's melodramatic scream to the heavens is hilariously over the top. The final guy to die screaming desperately to be pulled to safety as the Kothoga slowly climbs the wall towards him is super suspenseful and I really felt his terror, which more than made up for the aforementioned goofy anguished scream of his comrades when they only pull out his upper half. Speaking of the attack scene in the exhibit, everyone who is in that room is accounted for except the Blaisedales. Parkinson, McNally and that asshole Greg all get, followed by almost the entire SWAT team. The last two guys we know survive because the Kothoga for some reason refuses to leave the museum even to get them on the roof. But Mr. and Mrs. Blaisedale just vanish into the ether between when McNally and Greg get killed. I get the feeling that a lot got cut from The Relic (including the entire original ending, which caused the movie to be delayed until the following year because they had to film an entirely new ending) and I'm assuming they figured seeing an elderly couple get killed would've pushing the envelope too far. There's also the dead guard who drops from the ceiling in the Superstition exhibit much like Fred Beauregard in the novel... except whereas the novel establishes Beauregard as missing, I don't remember the movie ever establishing that a guard had disappeared prior to the exhibit scene where he drops in. And although I saw the movie first and liked it, I have to say the absence of certain characters is really felt, Pendergast in particular. To say nothing of Wright. We see the museum's public relations manager (Ian Cuthbert and Lavinia Rickman combined into one character) and chief of security (Ippolito pointlessly renamed to Tom Parkinson), but never the director(s). And although there's a Coffey equivalent in the (as far as I know) unnamed guy in the trenchcoat who takes command of the police situation outside the museum, nothing is ever done with the character, even though in the novel the disastrous idea to send the SWAT team in completely unprepared was entirely the result of Coffey refusing to listen to Pendergast and D'Agosta and believing simple machine pistols and assault rifles would hurt the monster. And although the way the story was adapted made him superfluous, I definitely missed Smithback, the king of snark. I always entertained the idea to read more of the Pendergast novels, but I gathered that they went fast to the serial killer theme coupled with complicated family plots which I am not very interested in. Yeah... I've heard that, too. I've ordered a copy of the sequel, Reliquary, because it seems like it'll still involve a monster or monsters, but I'm not really interested in any of the further novels. As much as I like Pendergast and D'Agosta as a crime-solving team, I'm not terribly interested in serial killers. At least not in a book series who first installments got the ball rolling with honest-to-goodness monsters. Hmm, it appears I was misinformed. Perhaps I will give some of the later Pendergast adventures, Bloodless and Brimstone in particular, a look sometime.
