I've been scouring the net, trying to ID this book ever since I saw a post on a search forum a few months back and am hoping it strikes a chord with someone on here: In the 70's/80's there was a pulp hardboiled dark Sci-fi novel about a cop/detective in the future chasing a serial killer between planets. The cop and the killer were both human but the killer had an alien henchman that looked like a 7ft tall praying mantis who would eat people as payment. Gritty, noir-ish, full of sex and violence, splatterpunk style, circa 1987 from maybe Tor or Ballantine. Some have suggested a Humanx novel by Alan Dean Foster but none fit, this is much darker in tone! Any help would be much appreciated!

Thanks for the suggestion, definitely the closest one I've seen yet but crucially it's missing the praying mantis henchman. Any other suggestions? Some people have suggested a Thranx novel by Alan Dean Foster but I can't find one that fits......
