The Mummy in Horror & Supernatural fiction

Brian J. Frost has written The Essential Guide to Mummy Literature (Scarecrow Press, 2007), but I've not yet got a copy so figured it might be interesting to try compile some kind of biblio of our own. I've not put hardly any work into this at all - only started it this morning. The short stories are largely culled from the theme anthologies noted below, while the woefully undernourished novel listing owes a massive debt to the bibliography at back of Bill Pronzini's Tales Of The Dead. If anybody wants to pitch in with additional material, please do.

It's prohibitively expensive--I think it was published with the academic library market in mind--but like all of Frost's books it's an excellent, and impressively exhaustive, resource.

He's one of the greats for sure. From what I can gather the Werewolf and Vampire bibliographies began life in our friend David A. Sutton's Shadow fanzine back in the 'sixties, and it could be the same with Essential Guide to Mummy Literature. I gather Mr. Frost wasn't very satisfied with Monster With A Thousand Faces so clearly we're dealing with a man who is his own fiercest critic.

A few more. Max Allan Collins penned novelizations of both The Mummy (Boulevard, 1999) and The Mummy Returns (Berkley, 2001)

According to Niel Price in Horror Literature: A Reader's Guide, Devereaux Pryce's novel Out Of The Ages (Parsons, 1923) is "a restrained handling of the curse-of-the-mummy's-tomb theme."

As for short stories, given their fondness for an Egyptian setting, I'd be very surprised if the many pseudonyms of Robert Bloch managed only a sum total of three between them. Sure, but THE EYE OF OSIRIS is the quintessential mystery novel with a mummy in it. There may well be a mummy in Carr's THE LOST GALLOWS, but I do not remember one, so it cannot be central to the plot. THE EYE OF OSIRIS is all mummy, all the time.

Arlton Eadie - The Scourge of Egypt (Weird Tales, October, 1929) "A strange tale of a mummy, a scarab, and Kephen-Ophis, slave-driver for that Pharaoh who oppressed the Israelites."

Burton Stevenson's A King In Babylon (1917) may be the first silent film-crew-in-peril novel. To paraphrase Leslie Halliwell's thumbnail sketch in The Dead That Walk (Grafton, 1986), A Hollywood company, having travelled to Egypt to film a romance, are stalked by "something dark and shadowy, something with the unmistakable odour of grave clothes." The male and female lead come in for the worst of it, especially when they perform beside a particular tomb.

Van Thal's The Ninth Pan Book Of Horror features an iconic man in rotting bandages shot on its cover, but i'm not sure the book includes any mummy fiction (?). On reflection, maybe it was a mistake to include Norman Kaufman's 'Lady On Display'[/u] (Nineteenth Book of Pan Horror Stories) onto initial listing. Edgar Quill's talent is for taxidermy, no embalming involved, and its a safe bet his victim will not be resurrected at a later date.

Tennessee Williams - The Vengeance of Nitocris. Reread this last night and whatever the story's merits, it's no mummy tale by any stretch of the imagination. The Pharaoh's pet project, a bridge across the Nile, is swept away in a flood. Furious at the fickleness of the gods, he desecrates a temple to Osiris something scandalous, earning a rebuke from his subjects who tear him to pieces. His sister Nitocris is proclaimed Empress and immediately sets to building a new, state-of-the-art Temple. The people of Thebes are delighted. It never enters their heads that she might harbour any desire to avenge her mad sibling, not even when she invites them en masse to an all-expenses-paid public orgy in its basement.

Looking at Nicholas Daly's "That Obscure Object of Desire: Victorian Commodity Culture and Fictions of the Mummy", Daly identifies a dozen mummy narratives between 1880 and 1914, including Doyle's "The Ring of Thoth" (1890) and "Lot No. 249" (1892), Haggard's "Smith and the Pharaohs" (1913), Stoker's The Jewel of the Seven Stars (1903), Boothby's Pharos the Egyptian, H.D. Everett's Ira, A Mystery (1896), and Ambrose Platt's The Living Mummy (1910), Grant Allen's "New Year's Eve Among the Mummies" (1884), Theophile Gautier's "The Mummy's Foot" (1908), plus a few other things.

R. Thurston Hopkins' The Demon Mummy Case(Cavalcade Of Ghosts, 1956) is a non-fictional account of a cursed casket donated to the British Museum during Victoria's reign. After several mysterious deaths among those came into its orbit, the mummy case - containing the remains of a Priestess of Amen-Ra - was sold to an American Egyptologist in 1912. It accompanied him on his journey home to the States aboard The Titanic.

Robert Arthur's The Three Investigators muscled in on the action with The Mystery of the Whispering Mummy(Random House, 1965), while their mentor, Alfred Hitchcock, or somebody borrowing his name, edited a crime heavy collection I Want My Mummy (Dell, 1977). A shrivelled beast with five fingers deals death in Guy de Maupassant's The Hand and a mummified penis causes all manner of grief for the Duc De Richeleau's entourage in Dennis Wheatley's The Devil Rides Out.

From Bob McFadden & Dor's The Mummy (Songs Our Mummy Taught Us, 1959). Album also includes such fave grave raves as Sing Along With The Mummy (Shake, Rattle And Roll) I Dig You Baby, and Son Of The Mummy.

The Fall cover The Mummy (as I'm A Mummy) on Levitate (1997), but Mark E. Smith amends the line referencing Kookie, Kookie, Lend Me Your Comb to the even worse "I really came back to meet Paul McCartney."

On those all too rare occasions when Boris Pickett & The Cryptkickers shambled from their cobwebbed mausoleum, it was invariably to record a flop novelty horror sequel to The Monster Mash, and such was the case with Me And My Mummy (1962). More recently, fellow serial offenders The Misfits pitched in with Curse Of The Mummy's Hand (The Devil's Rain, 2011).

Scientist affords The Mummy's Shroud a reggae treatment on his Hammer- themed Scientist Rids the World of the Evil Curse of the Vampires (1981)

The Meteors' My Daddy Is A Vampire (Meteor Madness, 1981) is sung from the perspective of the lonely 'normal' member of a dysfunctional family. The mummy of our suicidal narrator is, of course, a proper mummy ("and she needs plasma too, But if you peel away the bandage the blood comes seeping through"). He also has a zombie brother to contend with.


From the close of the 'seventies, Canadian multi-instrumentalist Jeff Plewman donned top hat, shades and gauze bandages to perform as fiend with a violin Nash the Slash. I'm not sure that he had any mummy specific numbers, but the Slash recorded a mini-album, Decomposed (featuring Life In Loch Ness) which was "playable at any speed," and scored a minor hit with his jolly cover of Jan & Dean's Dead Man's Curve. Sadly, Jeff/ Nash passed away on May 10th of this year. R.I.P.

Jared Shurin, one half of the team who edited Unearthed (Jurassic London, 2013) has also compiled a 19 story anthology of original mummy fiction, The Book Of The Dead (2013) for the same publisher.

Theodore Orchards - The Red Curse of The Mummy (Ghost Stories, Feb. 1929). Celebrity psychic and sometime Elliott O'Donnell sidekick 'Cheiro' also contributed an article on The Haunted Mummy Case to the March 1930 issue of the same publication.

Basil Copper - The Adventure of the Cursed Curator (The Recollections of Solar Pons, Fedogan and Bremer, 1995). Sherlock Holmes #1 tribute act comes to the rescue of a haunted Egyptologist.

Derek Allen - Blood From The Mummy's Tomb (Fleshcreepers, 1986). A retelling of Bram Stoker's Jewel Of The Seven Stars for a younger audience in the manner of David Campton's The Vampyre from the same series. In a similar vein, Raymond Sibley's 'Ladybird horror classic' The Mummy (Ladybird Books Ltd, 1985) is a 56 page adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Lot 249)

C. N. Williamson and A. M. Williamson - It Happened in Egypt (Doubleday, 1914). Chapter 2, Cleopatra & The Ship's Mystery. Among the prized possessions of Sayda Sabri, Egyptologist, the mummy of a princess. "Mrs. East's friends notice that the colour of the lady's hair was slowly but surely changing from black to chestnut, then to auburn.". Can it really be that he has bagged Cleopatra?

Ron Goulart - The Curse of the Obelisk (Avon, 1987). Victorian detective Harry Challenge versus such forces of darkness as black magicians, a vampire, giant mechanical bats, and an animated mummy. All of which got me to wondering if Vampirella every got into any scrapes with Cleopatra, Nefertiti & Co.?
