I first read one of his storys in The Book of Cthulu. The Men from Porlock was a captivating and original tale of some rough woodcutters stumbling upon a town of, well, kind of Insmouth dwellers deep in the woods. It was rather violent and action-orientated, very macho and tough-guy like. Perfect blend between the old pulp-style and something more. I encountered his work in some other newer Lovecraft anthologies as well. Hand of Glory was another very well done story, a strange mix of a 20s gangster's tale and some vague Lovecraftion elements - the first-person narrator is the enforcer for a Mob guy who gets caught into a war between two magicians who may or not have murdered his father. It gets pretty surreal and also violent, but has some chilling set-pieces. Like a breath of fresh air it didn't degenerate into one of those urban fantasy pieces where you have angels and demons battling it out in L.A., but taking its topic very earnestly.
Barron has published a few collections of his other tales and a couple of novels. Has anybody read his work?
Edit:
aaand maybe I should have searched the vault before wrting this and not after. Now I found weirdmongers Review. sigh
