Hi All,
I am a long time lurker and thought I would introduce myself.
I've been a horror fan for most of my life. It started with a cheap paperback copy of "Pet Sematary" in the early 80s and has continued throughout most of my life. As I child I had been terrified of horror films, and I picked up the book thinking that it would be a good way to confront those fears, as there was no way that a mere book could scare me. Oh how wrong I was! In any case a lifetime fascination was born.
For the past 20 years I've been trying to collect the 200 books mentioned in the 'Horror: 100 Best Books' and 'Horror: Another 100 Books'. I've been able to track them all down except for Lovecraft's 'The Outsider and Others' and Higham's 'Tales of Terror'. This was a lot more challenging (and more fun) before the advent of the internet and sites like amazon and abebooks. Through these lists I have been exposed to a wide variety of authors that I would not otherwise have necessarily come across, so for that alone I find these lists very useful. (Lists also happen to appeal very much to an OCD side of my personality, but enough about that...)
Now for a question... I was given an e-Reader for Christmas and really have enjoyed it thus far. I downloaded a bunch of books from Project Gutenberg and have been very happy with this expansion of my library. I was wondering if the members here had any suggestions for good old-fashioned ghost and/or horror stories that may be available on this site (or on other free sites)?
Here's what I've found so far:
J. Sheridan Le Fanu has a number of collections here, which I've downloaded.
M.R. James' collections are there.
F. Marion Crawford has a collection or two there.
I have also already collected and read any of the books mentioned in the two '100 Horror Books' books, so I am looking for other authors who may be a little more obscure who are not necessarily already collected in these books.
Best,
Dave Blackston

There was a site called Horror Masters, which has now gone. A couple of weeks ago I found an archive of it, but even that's disappeared now.

Thanks for the tips! The amalgamated brotherhood site looks to be particularly useful as it contains many authors who I am not familiar with! There is a wealth of spooky stories out there -- one just needs to know where to look.

Greetings! In a similar vein, you might like to look at Gaslight - gaslight.mtroyal.ca/. Gaslight is a Canadian site of some antiquity (in internet terms), set up as an old-style discussion list, specialising in texts from 1800-1919. Click on the "Chronological List of Texts" on the left hand side of the home page. Although it's of fairly unsophisticated construction, it works well enough.

Another resource for vintage supernatural and macabre fiction: the Horror Stories section of the Havaris website.
