After nearly twenty years Lin and I have revived Parallel Universe Publications, which originally published Beyond magazine in 1995. Our first publication is Craig Herbertson's collection, The Heaven Maker & Other Gruesome Tales. This will be officially launched in Edinburgh on November 15th. A 254-page hardback, the book is priced at £20, and includes Craig's story from the Pan Book of Horror, as well as from The Black Books of Horror and the Vault's own Advent Calendar.

That really is wonderful news. Congratulations, Craig. I can't believe it's taken this long. And David & Lin, good luck with the revived Parallel Universe Publications. Beyond was a super publication, and, from what i've read of Craig's work - the Black Book, contributions, The Waiting Game in Back From The Dead and, of course, the Advent Calendar contributions - you've returned with a cracker of a collection.

Running my finger down the table of contents, i've read ten of the previously published stories and they'd make for a terrific collection in themselves. But good grief! Somebody brazenly admitting to participation in the career suicide note that is 'Big Vault Advent Calendar'! (So you should, Craig. They've been brilliant to date, and if ever i raise the cash, permissions forthcoming will be looking to stick the pair between paperback covers quicker than you can say Eat Them Alive).
minor corrections to the bibliography; The poem, Timeless Love, appeared in Filthy Creations #2 (Feb. 2007). We didn't run it as part of the calendar.
Synchronicity, to the best of my knowledge, made it's first appearance in Third Black Book Of Horror. It has never appeared in Filthy Creations.

I would have to check back with Craig about these as they are details he listed not me. Anyway, now that we have dipped our toes back in the publishing market, we are looking forward to venturing into more. We already have a couple of books in mind, one a reprint of a book first published in the 1930 and only available now for three figure sums as a minimum, and the other from a writer we almost published twice in Beyond - and would have had it not gone down the pan!

Nothing gets past you Dem. I was going to rush and check whether you were right about the corrections but given that you usually are I don't think I'll bother. I've a feeling it might have been a cut and paste slip. Publicly admitting to being inspired by the Vault to carry on writing is probably not the best career admission to make but it is true. In the collection I've thanked all those who published my efforts since coming here (I think) and those who are not mentioned by name should know that I spend far too much time on here listening to ramblings about collections, pulp, boobs, horror and the occasional 'we're all serial rapists' arguments and the collection just wouldn't have been collected without the general sense that people actually read this stuff. Lastly, a big thanks to David who was not only an inspirational author to me in my early days but also comes up trumps as an editor - something I could never have envisaged thirty years ago - sterling job and hats off.

I've a feeling it might have been a cut and paste slip. I'm a pain in the arse! Anyway, it's just those two need amending. Double-checked the rest, and they're all in order. I'm sure there are more, but these are other stories i'm aware of. Contributions to The Black Book Of Horror series: On the Couch ( The Second Black Book of Horror) The Mall ( The Ninth Black Book of Horror) Contributions to Filthy CreationsStrange Fruit [#3] The Death Tableau(Part 1) [#6] Contributions to the Vault advent calendar After I Kill Her (2010) Speaking of which .... Up until now, the Advent calendar has been created on the fly, which certainly gave it an edge. Some nights i'd go to bed with no story for the following day, but some generous soul would always come forward with a killer story and we always scraped through. This year - and this really guts me - it will require some pre-planning as negotiations with the cloth-eared fiends at B*rl*ys bank are proving a tedious drain on my time, so will be mocking up some kind of ad (they always seem to go down well) and firing off aggressive begging pm's toward the middle of this month.

Off to Edinburgh tomorrow so I will briefly disappear. The book launch is on the 15th. I appreciate that most of the Vaultees are miles away, broke, committed or have a social life but take it for granted that you are invited and will be missed if you are not there. I appreciate all the kind things people have said and would like to thank you all for being a great support, encouragement and a fund of knowledge and inspiration since I discovered the Vault.
Cheers folks (and save the naughtier pictures for when I come back) .

Craig, looks like you'll arrived just in time to help save your beloved Hearts!
Every good wish for the launch. Don't sell them all, because the Bride is getting me a copy for Christmas. Not that i've actually broken the news to her yet ...

My batch of the books arrived in the post today. The bulk of them reached Craig's brother, Scott, at the same time. Must admit I'm pleased with the way they look. It's the first book I've been responsible for publishing and it was a nail biting time till they got here.

It's very unlikely you'll see this until afterward but good luck with the launch tonight, Craig!.

It's very unlikely you'll see this until afterward but good luck with the launch tonight, Craig!. Thanks everyone, particularly David for working like a madman to meet deadlines but there were so many people who chipped in, down to Brian Keeley for churning out one of his masterpieces at short notice to the unnamed friend who lent me £20 to buy a pint at 2am long after the launch. (well more than one pint) I can confirm internet exist in Edinburgh but not for blokes who don't have one of these things that look like mobile phones and who spends his time dashing back and forward on buses to meet deadlines nowhere near a computer. I do live in a kind of hermit's cave and still can't accommodate some technology. All the more embarrassing when my twelve year old cousin can just about advise God about the weather on all sorts of strange shining devices. I would highly recommend Pulp Fiction www.facebook.com/Pulp.books on Bread Street for any launch. The place is nice, does coffee, helps distribute wine and holds about 33 people. So, if you are doing something slightly less commercially successful than The Rats its a great wee place well worht supporting. The launch itself went well. We sold a lot of books and then went next door to the bar until 3-30am. Flight home meant airport at 6-00am so I seriously doubt I am talking much sense now.
