Dawn of the Dead is my favorite, I think mainly because of the cosy, snug and safe feeling of having found that hideout in the mall, protected from the awful world outside. Like a last castle stronghold, endowed with luxurious comforts. It's great escapist entertainment, within a serious quality film.
But Day of the Dead is much more horrible. The whole perspective is nightmarish, right down to the aberrant dialogue. It fills me with awful anxiety. I wonder how much it may be portentous of the future.
It has a nice variation of zombies too. I especially like the one with moss spores having started growing from the sides of the head and out of the eyes.

although i have always thought that day of the dead was the weakest of the original Romero zombie films it was certainly better than most of the competition that was out there at the same time.
I will admit to find reading the PDF document about the cuts made to the film when it was originally submitted to the BBFC fascinating mainly because it was interesting to read the rationale behind why some of the cuts were being made. like ramsey i was also surprised to read they requested was cut from the film at the time

Massive fan of this film. The BBFC didn't like the gut munching or some of the zombie attack scenes at the film conclusion. Although the most graphic demise, that of Captain Rhodes, was left untampered. Strangely, and proof that the censors didn't know what they were doing at the time, they cut a finger chomp scene out. But left a very similar scene intact in Re Animator which hit screens around the same time. The cuts were re instored a while back for the old arrow release before they became the sucessful company they are now.
Also I'm a big fan of the much maligned Land of The Dead. Diary of the Dead was good fun. But sadly Survival of the Dead was poor indeed. But Geore Romero is a legend for me. Hell the guy even gave of the classic Creepshow for heavens sake.
