Howdy, My name is Karl, I'm 37 and from Leeds in the North of England. I've been browsing the forums for a few weeks now and I've decided it was time to join in. I collect old UK pulps from the 1940's/50's, mainly sci-fi, gangster and crime, 1960's sleaze pulps from the US and old 1970's NEL stuff. I used to be crazy on Horror books in the mid 1980's. I sold my entire collection about 12 years ago and I'm now -recollecting again after my bills have been paid. I do a mindless blog (link below) on recent finds, it's not very informative but it's a fun way to spend half an hour every other day. I suffer horrendously from dyslexia, so go easy on my grammar. See you around Regards Karl. pulpsnpunk.blogspot.co.uk/

Welcome, Karl, and that looks like a fascinating site of yours! I'm reminded that I earned a dirty look and a warning from an English master for reading the Gerald G. Swan Weird and Occult Miscellany in a free reading period at grammar school.

My daughter started college and we needed tha cash. Even if it is for a good reason it still hurts to part with books. Take care. Doug

You hardly get any money at all, selling your books to a second-hand dealer. And if you try to sell your books individually by yourself, on Ebay or ABE-books, it will take forever. Better to find some other occupation to get extra income.
I would never sell my loved books, that I have struggled to find in the first place, just to get money. It would be like selling your own children. Then I'd rather be poor, with the books at my side, and fight my way up from the bottom. There are always other possible and better solutions.

Many thanks for the warm welcome, Ramsey what a great story and if you are indeed the Ramsey Campbell of Night of The Claw fame, then I had the same experience with my teacher and that book, mine was taken from me as "trash" I "opened" her desk draw and retrieved it after school, seemed like the right thing to do. I got £4k for my gangster pulps that I paid about £50 for. Books are books and they can always be replaced, of course I keep the ones that are dear to me. But life is much more important, possessions are great but I wouldn't want to starve to keep copy of Richard Allen Skinhead book. We prioritize things in life, I've sold my books maybe three or four times over and replaced them again, it's a lot of fun. I'm one of those strange people that refuses to work a 9-5 job to pay the bills, I'm free to work as and when I please and don't mind the journey. Gives me time with my children and partner.

I got £4k for my gangster pulps that I paid about £50 for. . . . We prioritize things in life, I've sold my books maybe three or four times over and replaced them again, it's a lot of fun. . . . Bought for £50, and sold for £4000. . . . How in the world?! I know some antiques have gone up very sharply in value over the last few decades. But hardly books and paperbacks, except very special editions - if the used bookstore has the competent knowledge that is, and fair reason, or if you are lucky to find the right buyer. (I know nothing about gangster pulps, though.) I don't expect to get back what I paid for my books, even though there be Arkham Houses and the likes in the collection. I agree that upheaving and replacing the old and stuck, in life, is refreshing. I could use more of it - but in other areas I think, not my book collection. (Let it be said that my collection is concentrated, and weeded of all but the items I really like.)

But hardly books and paperbacks So called Mushroom titles have gone though the roof in the last 20 years. Take a look at some recent ebay prices www.ebay.co.uk/itm/300738920996#ht_500wt_1182www.ebay.co.uk/itm/150855138657#ht_500wt_948www.ebay.co.uk/itm/170855745680#ht_517wt_1167www.ebay.co.uk/itm/270982912987#ht_1002wt_1167Around £500 for four books, I sold over a 100 gangster pulps. I used to frequent York Racecourse carboot sale and was lucky to come across a stall that was selling the basement contents of an old newspaper shop, comics, stationary, ink and they had a box of unused pulps from the 1940's/50's in mint conditon, around 2/300 I bought these for £50, these included 20 Hank Janson's. In recent times there seems to be a small number of very dedicated buyers that will pay any price it seems to get that elusive title. Have a look on Abebooks, you won't get much change out of £100 for a Gangster pulp. www.abebooks.co.uk/servlet/BookDetailsPL?bi=1355345837&searchurl=an%3Ddarcy%2Bglinto%26bt.x%3D0%26bt.y%3D0%26sts%3Dt

Were the 'Occult Shorts' earlier edition's of Swan's Weird & Occult magazine from 1960? Thanks, no they were a series in their own right, they lasted three issues and the issue you've linked is the last one. Swan did repackage some of the original Occult series as Four In One Weird & Occult Shorts in 1948. It's a great publisher to collect.

Much obliged, Karl, and thanks also for posting the 'H For Horrific' cover. One thing with Swan, his collections were invariably graced with glorious cover artwork!

Greetings, from across the pond as they say. I am a long island new yorker of 47 years; about 42 of them immersed in science fiction, Horror literature, and films. i am a Fine artist/ MFA in Painting /Drawing and poet. Always craving chiller theater and Boris Karloff films as a child, I am a HUGE collector of Stephen King, Clive Barker, Ramsey Campbell, Daniel Easterman, Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child, Justin Cronin,Peter Straub, Joe hill, Kurt Vonnegut, Bentley Little, Monotypes and sculptures of H.R.Giger, I am a Huge Gerald Scarfe, and Roger Waters/Pink floyd fan . There is, to me a hallucinatory devolutionary politic in their Art and Music respectively; which ,places them in the horror realm. I am a slightly+ misanthropic, eccentric, eclectic, non-hoarding, collector. My home is quite a bit Addams Family. Skeletons, skulls, 2 species of tarantula and a VERY tolerant lovely Woman. Very happy to find works new and suitable to my Lovecraftian Anglophile sensibilities. Beautiful Website , a pleasure-cheers to you all. Thanks for entry. R.S.S.

I feel instinctively you might be right about Pink Floyd. Yours would a great house to stumble upon in the dead of a stormy night holding a jerry can and looking for shelter.
